What is it with guns...?

For some reason there has been a boom around that people want guns... and I'm not talking hunting rifles, etc... but I mean hand guns... A friend I know just sent in his application for a concealed handgun permit...

Why in the heck do you need a hand gun, especially where I live...? sheesh, there is no one around here, and he goes to college with me, and it is a very safe campus.

I don't know... but I've been reading about hand guns on here, and how people want them and such.

But I mean, why do you need one, unless you are always carrying a LOT of cash, or for some other reason beyond the means of self protection if you say lived in a huge city with a high crime rate involving guns. Other than that, I don't see the need for always carrying a gun.

I don't plan on getting one, because I don't need see a fit need to have one.

Personal protection...I never went strolling around the woods when we lived in Alaska without a handgun...and a big one at that, grizzly bears tend to just get pissed off when you shoot them with toy guns.

just because you live in a place with low crime it just means the instance that you are confronted will be lower, it doesnt mean that you will never be confronted

owning a gun doesn't mean you are out to protect yourself by shooting someone.....that is just an added bonus

1. Because I can't carry a cop.

2. Because those I protect are INFINITELY more valuable than the aforementioned quantities of cash.

3. Because crime is not something that only happens in the ghettos.

PS-

I just got my new P7 holster. It's sweet! Great price too. It was made by a custom leather guy in Alaska. If anyone here is looking for one, I'll send you the info.

Large cities have more crime because there are more people. You can live your life in a big city and never be involved in a crime. Never have a need to protect yourself. Then again, you could be the victim (I hate that word!) of a car jacking / kidnapping sitting at a light in East Podunk, Somewhere.

The question is, "What If?" Think of it like defensive driving, what if that car ran the light you're coming to? What if that pedestrian stepped out in front of you? What if the driver approaching you is drunk and drifts into your lane? What if your brakes failed right now? Would you rather be prepared and know what you can do to prevent injury to yourself? Or, be a statistic and be injured or perhaps killed?

Carrying a weapon, and (most importantly) knowing how and when to use it can save your life just as assuredly as defensive driving or looking both ways before crossing.

Being accomplished at defensive driving gives you a sense of pride and security in knowing that you will most likely arrive at your destination unscathed and intact because you have what it takes to do so.

Carrying a weapon, and knowing how and when to use it gives you a sense of pride and security in knowing that you will most likely arrive at your destination unscathed and intact because you have what it takes to do so.

The feelings of security and pride, of relying on one's self, serve to increase one's self esteem. Self esteem is important to humans.

Your question seems to indicate that you have accepted "The Media's" message that your nasty gun, tucked away in the back corner of your dresser drawer, will sneak out some night and kill everyone in your house, and in the houses on both sides of your house. Shame on you for your acceptance!

Then again, good for you for seeking information on a subject you really don't like.

Just remember, the US Supreme Court has said the police have no responsibility to protect you. Think about that! You need them because your life is in jeopardy. They don't respond in time! Oh well, sucks to be you!

You, and really, only you, have the responsibility for your own personal safety. Not the cops! Not the government! If you're over 18, not your Mommy or Daddy! You!

You want to be Bambi? Fine! Many of us do not! Many of us enjoy the feeling of being able to go where we want, when we want, without looking over our shoulder to see if some government appointed official is close enough to protect us.

That's why the interest in hand guns and the carrying of them.

Virginia Tech was a very safe campus too.

Because evil is alive and well in this world, and it doesn't confine itself to just the other side of the tracks, the sketchy part of town, or college campuses in bad neighborhoods. I don't go looking for trouble, but that doesn't mean that trouble isn't looking for me or you or anyone else.

Better answers above but my weapons help me sleep a little better at night since I feel a responsibility to keep my family safe. I don't carry in my own day to day but I do when tripping with the family, etc. I won't be the guy watching helplessly. How do you plan on defending yourself in an overwhelming situation? I read about it every day how someone somewhere (ANYWHERE) got murdered, rapped, you name it. The odds are probably very low and I guess you can hope and trust it'll never happen and have no back up plan or you can hope and trust it'll never happen and HAVE a back up plan. I would highly suggest a back up plan especially if you have others to watch out for.
