One point that is often overlooked is that it gives both sides---union and "management" a level playing field. Everybody knows what they can and cannot do, and everybody knows what the consequences are.

Everybody also states that with ethical management that unions are not needed. I have dealt in the past with several unethical admins. Another point is this---just as the union workers, management can make mistakes. Through the mutally agreed-upon CBA, everybody knows what is a grievable offense and what isn't. There are no surpises.

Could this be accomplished without a union---possible, but not likely. I do like the ideas that through the CBA everybody knows what is expected of them and what the connsequences may be if there is a type of non-complianece.

I apologize if this point has been mentioned (I didn't read some of the posts); A CBA by both parties prevents a personality conflict to escalate into a wrongful termination or punishment. Let's face it, in a perfect world, this wouldn't happen, but in the working world, it can and does happen. Let's say that a person in management has a problem ( personality conflict)with somebody---and calls them on the carpet for what might be a minor infraction---and they end up with a punsishment that does not fit the "crime."

With a CBA, this cannot happen.

I shop at Walmart for 2 reasons - price and convenience. Their groceries are 10 to 20 % cheaper than at the other supermarkets in town and I can get a lot of other things I need when I am there - 24 hours a day. I don't shop there because I *LIKE* them.......

90% of our groceries and household supplies come from Walmart.

Good grief...... where do you guys think of these? Is there some big union "what if" book some where?

What if the tooth fairy came down and gave all your co workers a paid day off and made you wear a pink flowered sun dress while doing all thier jobs? If you were union you could file a greivance.......

You guys do realize these things don't normally happen in a reputable, normal business and there are laws that the unions got put in place over three quarters of a century ago that protect you from most of these events.

PSS-Mag---ithappens, trust me. It may not happen often, but I have seen it and seen the case summaries; I have worked for a couple admis that would, at times, disregard the rules. If they got called on it, OK, if not, so much the better.

IT is not a fariy tale world; it is a real world, and personlity conflicts do exist. A CBA prevents these real world situations from interfering with evaluations, job performance issues, and possible punishment issues. Trust me, I admit that it does not happen often, but I have seen it happen.
