And that is great when the company gives you mutual respect.
I'm not going to argue with someone who is treated right by a non-union company.
I would like to say that companies that do respect their employees have seen the light due to what unions have done to set presedence.
But I can't, it's still great when a employer respects their employees though.

I do agree that unions were needed badly at one time, came into the workforce and helped get these rights for people who were abused. Some companies may still need unions to keep them inline, althought I would never work for such a company. I just feel unions are a thing of the past, the facts agree as union numbers dwindle every year

Scott1981 Please look at some of the articles and websites I've posted, the may be union websites but they come from DC.

We are not that much different you and I, I understand the position of a business as I own stock in my company, I want them to be profitable too!!

That is the same for Union and non-Union, except for the Union they call it layoffs and let people go...

Neither union or non-union employees are more protected from being let go, just different language is used...

The vast majority of companies out there that treat their non-union employees with respect and pay them well are not doing it because of any “union precedence” but rather to keep their educated and motivated employees so they don’t see them go to another company…

That’s the difference, to move up in life and in business you MUST have motivation. While there are many in the unions that have motivation it is NOT a requirement to be in a union and move up…

Why do people in unions continually try to imagine that the vast majority of people like me who are well paid and have moved up quickly and to the top have done so because of what some union may have done. It’s fantasy, or at least has been fantasy for over 40 years. Unions lost their edge decades ago and are only around because of laws rather then the majority of workers at union companies wanting them there…

Sometimes I wish it was that easy....

It's an umbrealla that covers the hat(s) I choose to wear any paticular day..... LOL

It's a Master photographer, apprentice videographer, Master pre-press graphic composition artist, apprentice post produciton video editor, Master General graphic artist (pre-lab prints specialist), Master print marketing design and apprentice broadcast marketing design, Master copy writer, among many other mostly creative skills. My job description has empty lines in it for me to add to it when I say I want to do that too and add that skill to my resume...... Of course for me to do that, then I already have someone lined up to assist or take over other jobs.

Notice the wording used...... "add that skill to my resume".... what does that tell my supervisor? One: that they are investing more money into you. Two: They are giving you skills that would help you go somewhere else at thier expense.......

Before this I was a basic laborer (line worker), left there for here.

Before that I picked up the pre press graphic composition artist skills working at a newpaper. Went from apprentice to master in 2 months.

Before that Account Manager at a local radio station

Before that a produciton master combination welder specializing in resistance welding. (Fatory worker)

(Overlaping these two: Moon lighted as a financial anylist, including Life, health and auto insurance plus securities) Yea my retirement is taking care of and is not dependant on a single company's disolvability....... If my retirment dissolves, we've all got much bigger things to worry about.
(I do use my companies 401K and will enjoy the added free retirment benefits, but it is just an uncalculated bonus to my retirement along with the free retirment from prvious employers, collectively $827 a month I will already draw just from those.) "Providing that they all stay in business" so thats why I dont count it.

As a financial advisor, I advised everyone, not to count on your companies retirement.... If they go chapter 11 between now and then, then that's gone! You wont/don't get it! 401K is a seperate account. You will get it, that is your own personal savings account, take full advatage of that and anything that they will contribute to it for you.

Before welder... unionized garment maker "factory worker".

I can tell you this from all those experinces, when I was union, the union did a great job at convincing me and the other members that I/we couldn't do any better than where we were, I was scared to death at the thought of exploring other options......

The plant shutting down was by far the best thing that ever happened to me. Not only did I learn other wise and learn how very wrong they were, I also learned the difference between a skilled worker and a master craftsman and the difference in the quality of life that the two have. A skilled workers life sucks...... I have never met a single happy one, I just thought thatw was how it was suppose to be. Now I look forward to getting up and going to work everyday, skilled workers dread it and look forward to the weekend.

Not saying a master craftsmans life is a bowl of cherries, there are negatives to any job, politics and negatives happen.

I think my main beef with unions besides the obvious ones, is the added politics and stress they create in the workplace. There is a reason insurance premiums are more expensive for union workers...... Your not expected to live as long nor be in as good of health. Suffer stress related illnesses and are more likely to use chemicals (Nictotine, Alcohol, misc drugs) to compensate.

Now let me add: I'm not saying that everything the unions bring to the table is negative.... they do have several positives, most have been listed a few have not.

BUT:
If you listed all the negatives of union and all the negative of non union, rated each one from 1-10. Ten being the most severe/serious. The numbers speak for themselfs
Then do the same for positives....
List all the positives of a union and all the positives of non union, rate tehm from 1-10. Ten being teh most positive.... again the numbers speak for themselfs.

Of course everyones list is going to be subjective to opinon based on personal experinces. Mine, yea I think everyone knows how my list goes......

01' how do you think those laws where passed???
8hr work day, union labor set presedence
40 hr work week, same
time and a half and double time ditto
health benefits labor fought for those and won back when the garment industry was unionized back in the 30's

I've said from the get go, every worker in the united states benefits from what unions have done in the past, and thanks to unions we still fight for those rights and will try to preserve them other wise big business will reduce benefits, wages and everything unions have fought for.

Christ man, the internet is a very useful tool, look up labor movement or labor history, the american worker ows his weekends off to unions as wellas health care, retirement. Don't walk around with blinders on.

So we are good PSS-MAG? I really needed to aplogize last night but after my post I felt better.

Please re-read my post. I stated unions have not done anything for the vast majority of workers for decades. While some of those things you mentioned may have came from unions over 40 years ago there are NOT here today because of unions or fear of unions coming into the work force.

The reason the vast majority of non-union companies treat their employees well, pay them well etc is TO KEEP THE educated and motivated ones and not lose them to another company and has NOTHING to do with anyone worrying about a union where that may have been the case over 40 years ago.

Do your homework and you would have known that…

Been union for 22 years 01' xlt sport, pretty much makes me a expert on the subject.

The reasons unions came about is because workers back then where held at the mercy of the company.

Ever heard "I owe my soul to the company store?"

Company opens shop in state, hires workers, buids workers housing, stores, textiles, merchants all owned by the company.

You made your maney there but you bought provisions from them as well as purchasing your house from them.

Something had to be done, it was a idea that if ALL the workers stood up at the same time and said they wanted fair treatment they as a group could benefit from it.
People DIED fighting for a 8 hr work week my friend.
Plenty in the history books if you would open your eyes.

Or where you the Spicoly of your school
