That's Missouri.
Here, your tax is on the purchase, not the amount you sell your old car for...That’s what trading it in is, legally. They buy the old car from you.

Plus license here is based on what the car is worth, according to California, and thus is amazingly high.
3 grand is not unusual for annual license.

So you buy a new car because you want to be seen in one. And you can afford to throw away 20% of the cost for that privilege.
Which is fine, but anyone that doesn't understand that is kidding themselves.

Leasing is even more expensive, but most people are public school educated (in other words, can't do simple math) thus the economy just keeps right on chugging.
That's a good thing, I think...

How to find out if you are mathematically challenged? Try these simple tests;
Do you have payroll taxes deducted to get a great refund?
Do you look at the payment amount, rather than the cost?
If you answer yes to either question and you are not wealthy beyond your needs, then…

GA is the same way as Missouri...you only pay tax on the amount of cash that exchanges hands. If you trade a $20k car in on a $30k car you only pay sales tax on the $10k difference. They look at it like you already paid tax on the $20k car when you bought it...so you only have to pay it on the difference. Also here you only have to pay tax on a car you buy from a dealer not a individual (this really only applies to used cars of course.) We do have to pay an advalorum (sp?) tax each year thats based on the vehicles value...tax on my truck this year was a little under $300.

Pretty different than California. Here you pay tax on cars bought from an individual. They tax the transaction, not the item. So you can pay tax on a car six times in a year if it changes hands six times.

Since GA isn't taxing individuals selling cars, the trade in is an individual selling a car to a dealership, thus not taxable.

Dealerships don't pay enough in a trad-in to have ever got one of my cars. The best offer I even had for trade-in value was roughly 65% of what I later sold the car for.
My wife sells her cars at about 30k miles, usually 4 years old. Low mileage, garage kept babied cars. Dealers usually offer us less than half what she sells them for. They aren't in business to pay customers, they have to get their trade-ins way below value or it’s not worth their time.

I based my previous statement on the following:

Customer of ours buys a 2007 M6 for $130k plus fees, which is roughly $143k. Takes the car home to his wife, she hates the color. So he comes and trades it in at the Ford dealer where I worked and got $94k for it. Do the math, that's a $49k loss in about 2-3 days. I thought a BMW held its value.

Edmunds and other such sites base what a car is worth after 12 months or 15k miles on RETAIL values. Obviously, no dealer is going to give you what retail book is for your car when you trade it in. If they did, I'd be at the BMW dealer right now buying my wife the 328i she wants.

After 3 years in the car business, I am PRETTY SURE that I know what I am talking about. Not 100% sure, but almost.

I don't care whose it is, it's a bad-*** car...

Someone's grandmother bought one? Holy Schyt! That's one hot grandma, for a BEAST of a car like that...

Yeah, I think it is nice to be wealthy. I hope to find out one day- not that I ant to be "stinky" rich, just "stinky" well-off. Well-off is good enough for me.

My best friend has a 2004 745Li, a 2006 Mercedes GL450 Premier, and just bought a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo ($145,000.00). That 911 is one bad summabitsh, but I'd have gotten a C6 (even if they are a dime a dozen, and hardly distinguishable from the regular C6) or an M5.

M5 USED to be the bad-*** sedan, but there are two now that are faster. CLS55 (As will the CLS63 be)and the Bentley Flying Spur. The CLS is faster (quicker) in a straight line, but gets it's lunch eaten on a road course, and I'm sure the Flying Spur will. But, in a straight line, that flying spur will hit 192 MPH, with 4 doors... That's bad-***. BMW and MB's hot rods are curtailed at 155 MPH. The 911 will also do 192 MPH.

PS: He'd have done better taking it back to the BMW dealership... He'd still have gotten raped, but hopefully not for $49,000. What Ford (Or Nissan) in the WORLD did his wife prefer over a BMW M6? Did they finally import the Skyline GT-R over here?!?!?! Don't say the GT, because fast as it may be, that's one ugly SOB- and not a car I could imagine a girl gravitating to...
