I, for one, would hate for computers to be picking the rankings. If they went to computer-only, the instances of fraud would probably go up, as those computer rankings are only as good as those that put in the parameters for the computers to use.
But it's the humans that always screw things up and cause controversey. The computer put MI and FL tied. Fine. Play a game next week to decide who gets the shot. But the damn humans and their 'opinions' screwed it up. If USC won would FL have moved above Michigan? Not bloody likely.

There would be no fraud... every confrence knows the formula and agrees on it. Done deal. The numbers should tell the story. And with mulitple sources tracking game stats I doubt anyone could pump up their numbers enough to make a difference. Plus it would be easy to go back to the film and recount the stats.

Somehow I don't think "the public" feels good about the rankings. Each year one or two teams gets the shaft.
