Who all here is on Dial-Up? C'mon, Come Clean

Am I alone?
I can't be, who else is suffering on dial-up?

The price of living in the sticks.

I've been on cable for 8 years, and now this takes a little something to get used to.

C'mon, fess up, you know who you are.

I've got accelerated dial-up, and it's not so bad for surfing. But forget about downloading anything.

Dial-up...Isn't that where you put the handset of the phone into a cradle on the modem?

They still offer dial-up internet services? Are 8-tracks still for sale as well?

Well I think that is how AOL delivers their dialup services to mailboxes in the sticks.

Yup, laugh it up everyone, real funny, hardy-har-har...

The worst part is DSL is offered across the street (I can throw a rcok at it) and the idiots at the phone company refuse to run a line, saying it would cost them "hundreds of thousands of dollars"

Isn't DSL kind of like cable? Couldn't you simply tap into their DSL line, like we use to tap into cable, well not me, but other people?

Yeah, not you Burt, "Mr. Innocent", haha

I've thought about it, believe me... but 1) I don't know anyone at the school, it's a public school (up to grade 8), and 2) I've never had DSL, but I do know it's not an "always on" set up like I had on cable.

There's a local company who offers a Wireless Broadband service, I inquired, and they said it's almost as fast as cable.
$400 up front for the gear, $45 a month, and a 3 year contract.

I was all set to sign, but when I asked for their "SLA", they told me they don't have one for that particular service, and they won't guarantee any minimums, nor let me try it out first.

So basically I have to trust them that the service is as they say, and if it isnt, I have absolutly no recourse.

It's not that I'm untrusting, but bleh.... ok, I'm not putting myself in that position.

I too live in the sticks and dial-up is my only option, besides satellite which is ridiculously expensive. So here I am. . .tonight is a good night at 44.0 kbps. . . the price we pay for living in the peace and quiet of the country. The best part of dial-up - (is there a good part??!) it's only $16.00 a month!

$16.00?? My mom retired from SBC (At&t now) she gets phone service; two lines and all the bells and whistles for $5 a month and SBC yahoo DSL for $12.95 a month - locked in prices in her retirement package.

No, you're not alone. I still have this crappy AOL. My fiance loves this crap which is why she won't let me get DSL or cable which around here is actually running cheaper a month around here. When she lived with her mom, her mom had Bellsouth DSL for a while and they didn't like it. They said it was too hard to use. Plus their computer had so much junk(spyware) on it, DSL was actually slower than dial up most of the time.

We are always trying to find ways to save money and right now I am paying $28.90 a month for AOL where Bellsouth is offering DSL and Comcast is offering cable both for less than $30 a month. I need help convincing her to let us switch
