Glad to hear you are doing everything you can to keep it under control.
How long has it been since you have seen an eye doctor? As a diabetic I go every year. They especially like to look into the eye to see if there were any changes caused by the diabetes. They now have a machine called, I think, an Optiplex. it actually takes a picture of the back of the eye that they can sav and compare to the next visit. If it has been a while, I would suggest you see the eye doctor too. Better safe than sorry.

Don't they have a glucometer that you can ***** your arm or somewhere other than your finger? I thought I remember seeing them advertised on tv. Maybe the one that BB King and I believ it is Kenny Wayne Sheppard are doing the adds for.

My mother is always wanting me to ***** my finger and check mine, I ain't havin none of that. I can carve my name in my are with my pocket knife but you aren't sticking my finger with nothing.

Glad you decided to go see a doctor and got this process of controling it started now rather than waiting. Who knows, maybe once you get things normalized and regulated, they can get you off the shots.

Except for sugar free jello shots, that is.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better Jamz. I know the prospect of dealing with diabetes was a bit daunting to you but you seem to have overcome it and decided to be proactive and not become a victim. . .good for you!

I'm not sure about patches but they do have an insulin pump that can automatically administer your doses throughout the day. The Pastor of a Church I attended in Alaska was insulin dependant and when he got the pump it changed his life!

My brother was insulin dependent from the time he was an infant. He did not take care of himself by testing and eating right or seeing the doctor. His blood sugar was always way high or way low. I can't tell you how many times I found him passed out in diabetic shock. The insulin that he used was also much harder on him than what they have today. He suffered all of the complications and consequences of not taking care of himself. He lost his vision, his kidneys failed, and he began getting gangrene in his hands and feet before he passed away 15 years ago at the age of 36.

My nieces husband recently found out he was diabetic and has an insulin pump. When he sits down to eat, he enters info into the pager sized pump and it administers the insulin.

The pumps are very expensive, thankfully his insurance covered it.

Good Luck and take care of yourself.

The finger stick are no big deal if you do them right - Aim at the SIDES of the finger.. The TIP is where all the nerves are

Great news you have it under control Jamz,
I found out I had type 2 almost a year ago to date. The same symptoms. I take 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night. My fasting number is around 112 and will go to about 145 during the day and as low as 89. I use the OneTouch Ultra tester which you can use on your arm.

A general note is that you have diabetes 5 years before the symptoms become significant. My suggestion for anyone with a family history of diabetes is to have a glucose tolerance test every year. This will help to see if you are prone to getting it and will also help you manage your diet and excersize to prevent the onset of the disease.

I still have a few beers a day but I trade my carbs for that and I only drink the lite stuff. Over time you will find out what works for you. This disease affects everyone differently and so the treatment will be different for everyone.

The good news is my cholesterol went from 296 to 115 in 3 months, I no longer have high blood pressure and other benefits. Mostly due to the 36 pounds I lost in about a month and a half before finding out my problem.

There more diabetics out there than you realize and most are more than willing to help you out.

Good Luck and keep us posted,

i have tried a few of those lancet devices that are designed to be used on the forearm and never had luck with them. it would usually take me around 10 shots or so to get a sample.

the side of the finger is more comfortable than the tips where all the nerves are, but you still get reminded now and then when you hit a good nerve.

the freestyle 'flash' and i think accu-check monitors are nice in that they have software available from ther websites, coupled with a neccesary usb cable, that lets you download the info from the machine directly into a word-doc type format.

i think the freestyle machine says it requires the smallest blood sample of any of the devices. they give you these machines at a low cost (often with rebates) then rake in the cash when you have to buy all their test strips, but thats just the nature of the business.

there are probably others that offer the same functionality but i am not familiar with any of them..

I'm on Lipitor also. Went from around 250 to 153. Something else you may want to look at taking, and it is safe and non-prescription. OmegaIII capsules. Basically fish oil, and they taste like it. Even though my total cholesterol was low the bad number was a little high, (ratio between good and bad was perfect though), and my triglycerides were around 300. Way too high. The endocrinoligist said to try the Omega III 1,000mg twice a day. Now 6 months later, my bad cholesterol level is way down and triglycerides are 200. Still a little high, but much better.
These capsules cost me about $12.00 for 90. Well worth the price.

When you look at your cholesterol, the number you really want to look at is your LDL cholesterol. That is the Lousy cholesterol and is the number usually used for clinical monitoring.

Doug

I didn't get it this time Doug.

I would like to say, My B/G results have been below 200 the last week. Lowest 89....highest 157.

Get this chit.

I cut my hand bad Saturday night. It seems like bad luck is following me around. I cut a nerve or two, and the doc wants me to see an orthopedic surgeon to check for tendon damage. Just my luck.

Boy Jamz, when it rains it pours, huh? Sorry to hear about your hand, how is it? I hope there isn't any lasting damage.
