Europe
EUROPEAN UNION: EU countries are ready to give the United States oil if it requests help, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said on Friday. But British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said this was not what the EU had in mind when it discussed how to help.

FRANCE: Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said France was ready to offer support, telling TF1 television: "We have rescue teams based in the Caribbean and we are naturally ready to provide aid to the Americans, and that is what we have told them."

GERMANY: Has offered mobile units to provide clean water, military hospital facilities and medical aid.

ITALY: Has offered to "immediately" send aid and evacuation specialists, Italy's civil protection unit said. Authorities have prepared two military transport planes to fly amphibious vessels, pumps, generators, tents and personnel to New Orleans and other areas. They were awaiting word from U.S. officials, the unit said.

NETHERLANDS: Will provide teams for inspecting dykes and for identifying victims if there is a formal request from the United States. It will also send a frigate from Curacao to New Orleans shortly to provide emergency assistance, the government said.

RUSSIA: Has offered to help with rescue efforts, but is still awaiting a reply from Washington. "Above all with heavy transport planes, which can be loaded with helicopters and generators -- as there is no electricity in the area of the catastrophe," Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said.

SPAIN: Expects to receive a formal request to release gasoline stocks to the United States and is prepared to grant it, an Industry Ministry spokesman said.

SWEDEN: The Rescue Authority said it was on stand-by to supply water purifying equipment, healthcare supplies and emergency shelters if needed.

UNITED KINGDOM: British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said Britain stands ready to help the United States in whatever way it can.

Middle East
SAUDI ARABIA - Saudi Refining, a Houston-based subsidiary of state oil firm Saudi Aramco, will donate $5 million to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Add Canada to that list. Canada is sending 1,000 soldiers to New Orleans and their entire Navy of 3 warships loaded with supplies.

Sorry, I just cut and pasted the article. I think Canada often wants to disown their southerly neighbors , but no doubt they would offer significant help in a time of need. As would we in any similar situation that called for such aid, of course.

Well…

If Mexico really wants to help how about bringing a few hundred tractor trailers and taking some illegals home, that will really free up some cash…

I personally wouldn’t drink the water from Mexico…

You know, the big problem in a situation where other countries are saying they will help if requested, is that even in a time of crisis, America is too proud to ask for help. Im sure some of these countries know this, that is why they say if requested. What will that do to the American image, the wealthiest country in the world needing help from others. We need all of the help we can get, unfortunately, the government doesnt see it that way.

Well, we could help ourselves at the expense of many of those other countries. Simply stop any aid to many of those countries for a year and we could rebuild a few states completely…

I completely agree - we need to act locally at this point. We give so much to others - use that money on ours. If I could only choose one pathway, right now I'd prefer to donate a dollar save the life of a New Orleans evacuee than save the life of someone in a foreign country. Yes, we can't depend on France because they hate us....yes, we can't depend on the Middle East because we have already conquered all there is to conquer. That's pretty much the "Eastern USA" now.

But, I am furious with "those in power" about this one. They should have known that this was going to be bad. All the signs pointed to an eventual catastrophe. Hurricane analysts were predicting this long before it happened. By Saturday afternoon, 5,000 troops should have been mobilized to Barksdale AFB in Shreveport with MRE's and equipment and ready to move to wherever help was needed. There should have been troops IN New Orleans before the levy even broke.

Instead, our good ol' government didn't even recognize the disaster until Thursday PM. FEMA was weak in responding. Bush seemed to be more devastated that Trent Lott lost his house as opposed to the thousands who lost everything but their lives. What a joke.

I saw some photos of people rebuilding the levy that broke. One dump truck, one bulldozer, and one helicopter dropping sandbags into the water. Rebuilding most of the levy is job 1. Obviously you can't rebuild it all because the water has to drain back out somehow. There should be more people there. Even 20,000 soldiers can't work fast enough to do all the work there is to do over there right now. They need 40,000+ over there right now. But, oh yeah, they're all in Iraq fighting a war that is not able to be won.

I am glad that some other countries are coming to aid the evacuees of Katrina. Maybe with their help, we can actually do something. I mean, our own government isn't helping, so maybe with help from foreign countries, we can actually start to rebuild sometime before the next election.

Nice list . . .

Add to it Qatar with a sizeable offer . . .

(CNN) -- The oil-rich nation of Qatar has offered the United States $100 million to assist in the humanitarian crisis triggered by Hurricane Katrina.

The state-run Qatar News Agency said Saturday that Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, decided to contribute that amount for relief "and humanitarian supplies for the victims of this disaster."

The U.S. government has received offers of support from dozens of nations across the globe.

As of Friday, the White House had not accepted any offers

That last sentence is interesting . . .

It's disgustingly sad when folks take the extreme suffering of others as an opportunity to grind their political axe(s). What a miserable existence when the best you can do is latch on to the suffering of others to express your poll booth view. What a shame to our country you are….

Has this been mentioned yet?

KUWAIT CITY - The oil-rich Persian Gulf state of Kuwait said Sunday it will donate $500 million in aid to U.S. relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

Not sure what the rest of the world is doing, but its all over every channel on the news about every aid organization gathering money as well as individuals. Three warships left from Nova Scotia this morning after thousands of volunteers worked this past long weekend packing it full of aid supplies. And its not our entire navy, I think we have a coast guard boat somewhere on the west coast yet. . Anyways, I thought it was cool that a local radio station in Edmonton raised over $80000 from listeners in a couple days doing a pay for play and pay to block request thing, and thats just one small station. I think many americans would be surprised at how much is being done by some of the other countries, it's just not given much media airtime in the states. As much as I dislike our prime minister, I think the first time he did something right was to tell the whitehouse only hours after that Canada is ready to do whatever it takes and at whatever cost to help out.

I think the Prez and state department should look upon these gestures of aid as fence mending after the Iraq war divided traditional allies into "with us or against us".

The gestures are just that... gestures. Its a way for other countries to say "we value you and would like to show you during this traumatic time"

Even though the world knows that the US doesnt need the help.
