Chatahoochee river

Anybody here live near the Alabama/ Georgia border? My dad just called me tonight, he just bought a cabin on the river at a big reservoir. He says it's about 30 miles long and about 2 miles across where his cabin is. I can't wait to find out more details. Looks like I may be taking a road trip in August to tow his boat up there (he got rid of his Chebby 6 months ago) and to help him with some tree work and fixing up the cabin.

I don't live on the border, but "the Hooch" is practically in my backyard. (were my backyard several thousand acres, of course, it's about two miles away)

Congrats to him. Sounds great!

I live about 20 miles east of Columbus, but I work a few blocks down the road from the Chattahoochee, off 13th Street where the 'hooch seperates Columbus and Phenix City in downtown Columbus. A couple pictures...

That's from the Riverwalk, a trail that spans the Chattahoochee for I dunno how many miles, at least into Ft. Benning, through Columbus and into Phenix City. (edit - 20 miles from Lake Oliver Marina to the Ft. Benning Infantry Museum - http://www.columbusga.org/parks/park.../riverwalk.htm)

Another shot of the Riverwalk, if you looked to the left of that picture, there'd be the Dillingham Street Bridge and a construction site where CSU is building a new Arts center or something. To the right would be the 13th Street Bridge that connects Phenix City to Columbus. I dunno what part you'd be in, but when you find out, gimme a holler, I'll buy ya a beer or something.

Where would the big reservoir be? I really need to do some research on Mapquest or something and get an idea of where it is. Dad said it's on the AL side.
Heck, he just looked at it yesterday, he has to go back up to close on it in July sometime.

Great pictures, Quintin. I can't wait to get up there and get the bass boat in the water (as if we don't have enough bass lakes in Florida ).

Big reservoir? I guess that'd be the Walter F. George Reservoir, around Eufala, Alabama. Never been down that far before, but I've been east of there in Americus before, so I'd guess it'd be like a 2-3 hour trip for me, if that long.

A J is cool

Way down yonder on the chattahoochee
It gets hotter than a hoochie coochie
We laid rubber on the georgie asphalt
We got a little crazy but we never got caught

Down by the river on a friday night
A pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight
Talking ’bout cars and dreaming ’bout women
Never had a plan just a livin’ for the minute
Yeah way down yonder on the chattahoochee
Never knew how much that muddy water meant to me
But I learned how to swim and I learned who I was
A lot about livin’ and a litttle ’bout love

Well we fooged up the windows in my old chevy
I was willing but she wasn’t ready
So a settled for a burger and a grape sno-cone
Dropped her off early but I didn’t go home

Down by the river on a friday night
A pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight
Talking ’bout cars and dreaming ’bout women
Never had a plan just a livin’ for the minute
Yeah way down yonder on the chattahoochee

Some of the pictures that effectively started this site were taken alongside the Hootch...

I was born about 15 minutes away from the Chattahoochee in Carrollton Ga. I cross it every time I go home to see my family. I cross it on highway 16 between Newnan and Whitesburg. The resovoir must be Eufala, my grandfather did a lot of fishing down there when I was a teenager. He fished there alot when he worked on the power plant in Dothan Mnay years ago.

IN fact, we went down there many times in this truck that I restored and now lives with me in Florida.

You're correct, Seacrow. I just got back from Dad's and got to see pictures, etc. It's just outside Eufala (maybe 10 miles from town) and the place looks great! A covered porch wraps around 3 sides of the house, it's a 3/2 and has two fireplaces. Dad is also trying to buy the vacant lot next door. He's already got plans for a seawall, and a walkway down to a floating dock/ boathouse. He figures $25K-$35K for the dock that he wants.

He will close on the property in the second half of July (about 30 days) and me and my two sisters are already planning road trips for the beginning of August. Dad will need my truck anyway for towing up the boat, as well as a trip or two moving furniture and stuff up there. Since it will be a part-time residence, he doesn't want to spend much on furniture. Most will be stuff he already has or stuff us kids come up with.

I haven't even been there yet and I already love the place. I can see myself spending a lot of time at Dad's fishing cabin in the near future!

That's great Rocky, it sounds like a good getaway. Two years ago, my parents bought a cabin in Cleveland Ga. I helped furnish it and made several trips up there. Two months ago, the cabin next door went on the market and I bought it. Now altogether the family has over 500 feet of trout stream frontage with 5 acres of land and two cabins. They are on the end of a private road on top of a mountain. I love to go up there and get away from the crazies here in South Florida. And if we have another 4 hurricane year, I'll be in Ga.
