GM offers X plan to everyone

I just read that GM sales are down 5.3% for the year and they loss 1.1 billion in the 1st quarter, so they are offering their version of the X plan to the public for the next month to boost sales. All public will be allowed to purchase their vehicles for the same prices as their employees except the corvette and medium duty trucks. Interesting and maybe Ford will follow up!!

Ford already pumped up incentives on all SUVs & stuff. Up to 5K off an Expy, and even 2500 off a focus!

Edit: A snipped from the local paper:

Ford Motor Co. raised rebates Wednesday $500 to $1,000 on several of its slower-selling vehicles. The discount on the Ford Expedition was increased by $1,000 to $5,000 with rebates on the four-door Explorer hiked by $500 to $3,500. Discounts on the Focus sedan and Ranger pickup truck were also raised by $500. The total rebate available on the Focus is now $2,500 and $2,000 for the Ranger. Ford said the move was not in response to GM's program.

"We want to understand GM's offer a little bit more," said Ford spokesman David Reuter. "Our inventories are at a reasonable level right now."

Mikey,

I understand this to be more than X-plan. X-plan is what ford offers most of their suppliers employees. They have another plan which they offer to their own employees which is a much bigger discount than the X-plan. This is the plan that GM is offering to everyone. If Ford wants to keep up, they will have to offer the plan they give to their employees. I think it is called the Y-plan.

A-plan is for employees & their immeadiate family. X-plan is for friends, neightbors, suppliers, the bum on the corner, practically everyone. Z-plan is for retirees.

Ford doesn't have to offer their employee plan to sell cars. As it is now the incentives bring the cost down to about A-plan level.

All of the plans A, X & Z are all pretty similiar in discount anyways...

With A-plan, you can purchase the vehicle for less than dealer cost and you still get any available incentives. Still a much better deal than just the incentives; the only negotiation is if there is a trade-in.

I got A-plan on my Lariat. Other folks with nearly identical pickups have got it for slightly less or the same as I did... a-plan isn't the end-all price. Any smart shopper doesn't really need any special 'plan' pricing in the current auto market. If the country was booming like the .com era and automakers couldn't make 'em fast enough... then yes, an employee plan helps alot. Nowadays it's nothing special. A nice marketing gimmick by GM, but it will hurt them later when they try to return to normal MSRP pricing and some 'incentives'.

Ford isn't falling for this, they are sitting back to see what happens... a smart move! This is a desperation move by GM...

When you add dealer incentives as well, that can come to close to 10K off a full loaded Expy Eddie Bauer!

It's not really desperation by GM, just merely getting ready to clear off the '05s for the 06's. Ford should be doing the same. Nothing is selling around here (atlanta). All dealers including honda and toy are packed with inventory. Best time I have ever seen to buy a car/truck.

WHen I worked for a subsidiary of GM we got the GM-S and GM-O plans- those were dealer-cost plus up to (5%) mark-up (Dealer option).

The discount GM (and Ford) gives employees is even better, and the same level of discount afforded to employees is now avalable to customers... (Per the news).

Hmmm, a new white or silver Tahoe would look nice next to our black Expy.
