Million dollar question is what are you fishing for? That will set your choices...

well, your fishing for smaller fish, perhaps 5lbs. Max., except for the halibut that could tip some major scales. You won't need need a whole lot of backbone, unless a large halibut is a real possibility. Next question is what budget do you have? you can get yourself a nice 3 piece travel rod from almost any big name, quality depends on how much you want to spend.

When it comes to saltwater tackle, if you have to skimp on something, get a cheaper rod and spend more on a reel.

Fishing from a boat I imagine?

Ordered two Browning Rods from BassPro last night....

1 spinning M action 3 piece rod W/case / surf perch

1 trigger M/H action 3 piece rod W/case / Bass, yellow tail, Halibut.

The So Cal halibut don't get near as big as the Alaska variety....

sounds like you're good to go. The fish on the west coast are a total mystery to me, except for the shad and stripers that came from my side...

I've lived in Lost Angeles for 40 or so years now . . . . and, like New Yorkers who have never gone up the Empire State building even though they have lived there all their lives, I have never been to any of the Channel Islands . . . (flew over a few of them in private planes though) . . . so what I'm about to type may be way off, but I was under the impression that San Clemente Island was owned by the U.S. Navy and was used for target practice and invasion practice. (Actually, I didn't think anyone was allowed on the island, so if you are on a boat around it,you might want to wear a lot of kevlar and be ready to duck at any time.)

San Clemente island can be off limits at times of naval excersizes.

There is good fishing there but the perch just taste nasty.

Yellowtail will give your gear a good workout and they are worth the effort. It's my favorite fish to eat. Chunk it up and marinate in a good Ceaser dressing then BBQ. Mmmm yellowtail..
