Question What to Buy?

My wife and I have been looking for a 2000-2001 SUV to replace our 97 F150 XLT because we need more cab space for the kids! :-)
So far we really like the 2000 Ford explorer Limited with a 4.0L V6. Our truck has the 4.6L Triton V8.

My question is? With explorers what is the nest option? What have people had trouble with? Is the 4.0L V6 a bad engine? Are we better finding an eddie bauer with the V8?

Would love to hear everyones comments!!

4.0 V6

I don't know much about the explorers, but my dad has an 1994 Ranger ext cab with a 4.0 V6. All I can say is 200,000 + miles and still runs good. No major repair to engine or transmission, just minor maintenance like alternator, water pump etc. Very good little truck.

my cousin has an explorer with a V6 and my mom has one with the V8. the V6 is a great engine, plenty of power UNLESS youre gonna be towing frequently. the torque just isn't there, like tiis with the V8. so if youre towing, get the V8, you'll be glad you did. if not, then the V6 makes a great all-around engine.

Good point. I should have added to my post. I have a 4.2 in my F150 and tow a 2,400 pop-up trailer no problem. As you stated if he is going to be towing, especially something heavier then it would be best to go with the V8.

Thanks for the feedback, actually this is really going to be my wifes vehicle and no, we never tow anything....kinda a shame as with our F150 with the Triton V8, I don' t think we have ever had the ball cover even off!

Pick up a used Expedition. You can find a nice one for 10-16k with low miles. I have seen some used Navigators go for that low

I personally owned a 1998 Explorer XLT. Great vehicle. Had the V6 and towed with no problem.

I will say that if you're going to tow larger loads, you might want to think about stiffer springs on the back though... Pulling my dad's 19 & 1/2 foot Ranger bass boat gave it a 'crunch' in the back.

Still pulled fine... just was very 'rear heavy'.
