Hey Legokids,
I thought I'll also post this for you. I guess your aging mind forgot.
Military Oath
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

That is the way it is
Lets examine that Oath.
It says to have true faith and alligiance to the Constitution, (that document with the free speech stuff in it)
It says just obey the orders of the President. I did not hear the President Order legokids a military officer of 28 years to do anything.
I am getting a little tired of anyone Canadian or otherwise being savagely attacked here for voicing a dissenting view.
That is NOT the American way
Those that profess to be so patriotic would be wise to remember that.
I am certain you will get your pound of flesh.
Be patient.

Raoul:
My good friend, no one from Canada is being “savagely attacked” they are simple receiving an education, free of charge mind you, on America and the REAL history.
I do not mind any “dissenting view” so long as their reason for it are factual and logical.
Those being “re-educated” due to either a poor education or lose of some brain cells are the ones making statements that have no facts and/or logic behind them. They try to re-invent history in their own mind, like an illusion of some sort, that America is the bad guy, that America has nothing to do with their country being free and remaining free. I have yet to see one of these “re-educated” people come here and voice their opposition to Saddam and the way he rules his country, represses his people, and kills his people for voicing any “dissent”.
I have yet to see any of these “re-educated” come here and denounce the French government for supporting Saddam and supplying Saddam with all kind of goodies.
Bottom line is if these “Dissenter” from any other country can not come here and handle the truth, or @ss whooping, for being incorrect on their fantasized facts then they should just keep their mouth shut.
Anyhow, I am still your good friend right?

I personally find the fallacy in legokids's bologna to be the fact that he defends the rights of the Dixie Chicks to voice their opinion, but then attempts to poo-poo any right we might have to be unhappy with that opinion (re/the comment "So let it go, enjoy their music, and look to someone else for your preferred political leanings"). I know he's no lefto-commie (yeah right), but had he taken the time to read the thread (or perhaps understanding the thread was his problem) he would clearly understand that we aren't saying they have no right to voice their opinion, but we are utterly astounding that they (or he, or anyone else) thinks that we have some duty to "let it go, enjoy their music", when we all have a right to react just the way we want. XLT said it best we he said they have a right to say it, and we have a right not to buy their music. Simple as that.
With regard to the Oath, I concur that the allegiance is to the Constitution. Obviously, since that document establishes the President as CIC, tantamount to obeying that document is following the President's orders. However, I personally feel that military officers and ex-officers adopt a "higher standard" than average citizens when they take that Oath. I believe implicit in the verbiage "that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same" is the idea that perhaps you might disagree with the President, but you might go about voicing that displeasure in a "respectable" fashion (i.e. keep it to yourself).
I believe my grandfather was an excellent example. An ex-Naval officer from WWII, he would never discuss his political views or leanings, no matter what. Whenver the President was brought up, be it Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan or Bush, he would always say, "The President needs our support, he's everyone's President." He would never tell anyone how he voted (not even my grandmother), and constantly wrote various Congressmen, but never told anyone what it was about. It was only after his death that we discovered some of the letters and things he had felt very strongly about, but he handled it in the way a true vet would - NEVER publicly say anything negative about your country or the President especially in a time of crisis, if an issue concerns you deeply write your legislators, and most of all vote when the time comes.

Seriously. If the Dixie Chicks feel strongly enough about this issue, they have every right to take the chance of alienating a large portion of the country against their music. If people don't like you, in the entertainment business especially, then they are not going to prefer your product over someone elses. It really is, to some extent, a popularity contest. Image, not talent, is the most important marketing vehicle for these people. The celebrities that are currently on the "I hate everything GW does" bandwagon, are either very brave, to go against the grain on this issue, or very stupid. In my opinion, they are likely a little of both. Sincerity doesn't equal correct.

To: screwyou, 01 xlt sport, and a few of the dufei (plural for dufus) above.
Sorry, it wasn't the French uniform, it was the US uniform (two in fact as I served proudly in the Air force and the Army). I took the oath you quoted (who read it to you, and typed it for you? they 'dun reel guuud').
Between Airman Basic (E1) and Lieutenant Colonel (O5), I served with many outstanding soldiers (US and foreign). But just because we take that oath, it doesnt mean all live up to it. Of the soldiers I court martialed and sent to prison, they all took that oath. The General Officers I knew who were drummed out of the service took that oath. The men who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City took that oath. My friends whose names are carved in black marble in DC (no, not Dixie Chicks!) took that oath. We all took the oath (as did some of yhou, I guess) and lived the creed in varying ways. But an oath is just words unless the intent of those words is practiced daily.
A lot of Americans wave the flag on message boards, bumper stickers, colored stickers on their windshields, and T-shirts. I don't know what kind of Americans you two and your fellow dufei are, but destroying CDs is essentially book burning. Of course, if you all run out tonight to buy some CDs to burn,I'm sure the DCs will just LUUUVVV your ardor. Please buy three or four of each title so you can fill up that dumpster quicker.
Boycotting three pseudo-blondes and blowing off your big mouths are very good ways to show your patriotism....enlisting today would be even better. The Army is enlisting folks right off the street today for SOF...betcha 'youse goys' would be excellent candidates. Maybe we could even serve together...if they will only accept my request to go back in uniform like my request for Desert Storm I. If they take me and my fellow retirees (and yes, the miitary IS taking retirees back already), I'll let you know. Then send me your real names and mobilization site or Basic Training Post: I'll look you up and we can discuss the finer points of the Constitution and oaths.
But as far as the Constitution goes, you should read it all. Those three (I assume she spoke for all, but don't know) have a right to say those things: they didn't take the oath I did and someone read to you. What she said was reeeely stooopid (I spelled those words slowly so you wouldn't have to move your lips quickly) but within her/their rights.
Under that self-same Constitution.
The one you are trashing by your silliness about boycotting them.
Jane Fonda is the one who should have been punished: she went to an enemy nation (Vietnam, not England) during time of "war", gave comfort to the enemy (that wa Ho Chi Minh and his boyos), and ratted out the US prisoners who passed her notes to their families about their treatment.
Congressmen Durbin, Curley and Moe should be in jail: they gave comfort to the Slime In Iraq FROM INSIDE IRAQ after taking the same oath someone read to you.
You should look to where the real problems lie: not three pseudo-blondes for dumb statements.
Look at leaders who sell the nation daily. Look at leaders who refuse to answer to Congress (e.g., how many soldiers will be needed to occupy Iraq; how much it will cost in lives, revenues, and the GDP over how many years; etc).
Look at leaders who avoided the draft during Vietnam by becoming a Texas reservist fighter pilot but who didn't attend required drills: a punishable offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) punishable by fine, imprisonment, and either discharge (or, oddly enough) recall to active duty. Incidentally, this was during the same "war" in which Jane Fonda became Red Jane and many of my buddies earned their names carved in black marble.
Look at leaders' backgrounds and see i8f you can connect the dots between the politics and the business that don't mix:
Mr White, Secretary of the Army (last job Enron executive; investigated for trying to push the sale of Enron products to the....oops Army).
Mr Cheney, V-P (last job CEO Halliburton a subsidiary of Brown & Root...under investigation for padding bills to [are you ready for this?] the military in the field). If someone will read this to you, B&R is a defense contractor (perhaps the biggest of its type) who set up and operate military installations: they are paid to produce power, clean offices, and a host of other functions. The inflated bill this year included more than twice the power our soldiers could consume; offices cleaned four times daily; and problems with workers sitting on their butts; etc).
Mr Donny Rumsfeld, SECDEF (last job yet another defense contractor; questioned the judgement of his Army Chief of Staff; refused to accept GEN Franks' force estimate to fight the war; alienated most of the free world, Congress, and the military; ETC!!).
There's more, but I'm sure your readers are getting tired of reading to you. So you go on and focus on the Dixie Chicks. Since Nero fiddled while Rome burned, why don't YOU do the same? Toss those CDs! Put yet another bumper sticker on your truck! Wrap that flag a little tighter around your beer bellies! Prove you are good Americans!
But Dufae: you have a perfect right to say and think what you will. You are, if not especially well-informed citizens, citizens nonetheless. And I love you and the opportunities you gave me and my buddies to defend you. We would still defend you. Pray for my request for recall to come through as do I: I'll devote some more time for you, and perhaps this time I will join my friends who gave their all to allow you to boycott the Dixie Chicks! It would be an honor!

legokids:
I respect your opinions and what you have to say. However you seem to have some issues and seem to want things both ways.
It is great you served in the military. I did as well. If I could go back in now I would, however I can not. Would they take me back in? No, to old 38, yes I asked just out of curiosity. If they had said yes I still would not be able to go back in. I have a 14 year old daughter and am basically a single parent. She has a mother, biological wise other then that not a mother at all.
You act as if it is ok for some bitch to run her mouth to be a “part of the crowd” but for someone like myself who has deep core beliefs, charter, and creditability is “acting out”
Yes, what I am implying about this dump bitch is she is lost, a follower, she has NO idea of what she really believes, but only goes along with what ever is popular for the moment. This is the reason she made an apology for her, in my 1st amendment, opinion was stupid. Why did she apologize? Well she did not do so because she really believed in what she said, she did not apologize because of her charter, she did not apologize because she has creditability, she apologized ONLY because it is what is popular for her to do at the moment.
For those that wish to burn CD’s is not the same as some book burning as you speak of. It is not censorship by any means. It is not an act that is being carried out, supported or funded by the government. It is being done out of protest for some bitch opening her mouth in a foreign country.
Now, as I stated earlier, she has every right to do so, you I and many others served so as to insure she had that right. I myself like many others also served for myself as well to have the right to state she is a bitch and deserves what she is getting. It is not for you to question my motive for my position and then acting like if I don’t go back into the military then I should keep my mouth closed.
That my friend is what you call censorship.
Perhaps you have a problem with other post in other threads I have made and why you state my name in your post. If you have a problem with them then address the issue rather then whining about how if others like me do not return into the military we basically should not speak our mind.
I served my country, now it is my time to serve my daughter and be a father. I do not need to prove anything to anybody. I can stand my ground regardless.

I believe what would be in your best interest is to go back and actually read the Constitution of the United States of “America”, specifically the 1st amendment.
Not the liberal one you have hanging on your wall. I am sorry but I have to seriously question if you indeed served in the military and/or if you actually voted for the Republican Party. You speak and write as a socialist liberal, whereas it is ok for “Freedom of Speech” so long as it is inline with your beliefs. When it falls outside your beliefs the “Freedom of Speech” amendment (aka 1st amendment) is null and void.
So which is it?

No, boycotting is NOT bookburning. There is an extreme difference between not buying something and not allowing it to be sold. People throwing away albums of someone that they do not want anymore is not bookburning, or in any way comparable. The government probably doesn't care enough to even get involved in it, much less condone the actions taken by some people who were disgruntled by their comments. I am not saying that they do not have their rights to their own opinions, but I AM saying that they should not ever use their status as entertainers to try and be spokespersons for the United States and/or entertainers, country or otherwise. What she said implies that country music fans/supporters ahre their same views, because country music is really just small-town music, and a lot of the people who are `country` have similar beliefs, and being in her position, she was representing country musicand what country music stands for, not just her personal views, because when the people from England hear this, they see it as a reflection of the general sentiment of country music (because this is how they know `country`), and I for one do NOT think she is qualified to speak for anyone other than herself, and I certainly do not want her to plant seeds against the American government in any foreign minds, it is bad enough already without them thinking that even the successful Americans hate their governemnt. You see, this is how free enterprise works, you have to sell yourself, and if the Dixie Chicks sink themselves, then sorry ladies, that is how the entertainment business is. If everyone just `let it go`, then their hard work to get to where they have already been was all for naught, and no one would ever have to worry about becoming a sell-out or making their fans mad. If you are in the business of selling yourself for a living and you want to stay as successful as the Dixie Chicks have been, then you had better stay on the good side of the majority, and make them like you so much that they go buy something that you, personally have worked on so hard. If you can't stay on the good side of the majority, then expect to get swept away with the minority opinions. If you make the majority mad, then expect them to throw your albums in the trash outside record stores and expect to have your songs pulled from the air. That is just how it goes. If you sell an image, make it one that appeals to the most people, unless you just want to sell less.
Also, I don't think legokids was saying that we don't have the right to boycott, legokids was saying that letting it go is the best way to deal with it, he is just a REALLY easygoing guy (or lady, no disrespect intended).

Hey guys read this:Statement from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks
March 14, 2003
"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."
Now aren't you guys ashammed!
