F350 Lariat info
I am looking at "buying" my neighbors F350 Lariat diesel dually w/ 41,000 mi.
They are proposing an even trade for my 2006 F150 4.6 standard cab long bed w/35,000 mi. I've got the VIN # and all the other code numbers from the F350s door. Can someone point me to a site or resource to interpret all these numbers? Thanks for any help.

Heres the VIN:

Here's the deal.
I have an 06 F150 standard cab long bed 4.6. Auto, AC, Cruise. 35000 mi. Very clean and I have done a lot of upgrades: Troyer tune, Volant CAI, E Fans, Trans cooler, bed liner, Magnaflow catback, $1800 stereo, Bridgestone Dueler H/L tires. I really love this truck and it tows my 6800 race car trailer rig very well. (I am jonesing for gooseneck 42' race trailer with living quarters. Obviously the 150 cannot handle a rig that size.)
My neighbor is the second owner of the 2000 F350. They bought it from a good friend who was going to trade it in. They paid $18,000. a little over a year ago. They bought it mainly because it seemed like such a good deal but it is too much truck for them as a daily driver and they only tow a 2 horse trailer occasionally. (My 150 would easily meet their tow needs.) What I know about the F350: 7.3L diesel, 4WD Dualie, crew cab, long bed, 173wb.
Gooseneck flipover tow ball & tag tow hitch. 46,000 actual miles. Lariat trim option - leather,ac, cruise, power everthing. The truck is very clean.
I have no idea what my truck or the F350 are worth, but it seems like it would could be a win/win swap for both of us. Any thoughts? Is the 7.3 a good platform? Any known issues with the 2000 F350? Thanks for any help.

I ran a carfax check on the VIN and it comes up clean. Re-reading my original post, I did not make it clear that it is a 2000 F350 vs my 2006 F150.
The neighbor is a woman who has been a very close friend of our family for 15 years. The truck belonged to her husband, who died of a stroke last year.
There is definitely nothing shady about the deal. I do wonder what the market values of the 2 trucks is.

This is a pretty tough scenario...there are many paths and I am sure many opinions on this.
Here is mine:
I was in a VERY similar situation as you. Had a sweet F150, Troyer Tuned SC 5.4 3v, 4K stereo, AF1 and 20's....mine however didn't pull my 6000# 27ft TT very well. Yes it could do it but the MPG was deflating. So I got a PSD...here's how.
I took ALL My mods off and took to Ford....they gave me 21K for it. Had 32K miles on it. 04 Lariat SC. Then I turned around and bought a 06 King Ranch with 9K miles on it for 34K. I owed 16K on my truck so I felt like I got a good deal...then put a few K down and I am sitting ok. Is it paid for? No....but I tend to trade every 2-3 years. Now I can pull a house down. Well sort of. But it does pull my TT like a shadow.
From what I have heard the 7.3 is a really good engine. If you do a search on AutoTrader you will find out what I did. It didn't really matter what the mileage was on PDS's (6.0 version I looked at) the pricing was all pretty much the same. So I would do a little research b/c I think you should know the value of each in case you "leave money on the table" If you find you are getting the better deal, you could always sell the 350 then buy something new.
So the net is, you have options:
1. Trade straight up. Who gets the better deal? That depends on perspective.
2. You trade for a newer used PSD (do NOT get an 04 PSD)
3. Wait and get a used 6.4 PSD
5. Trade for a new 6.4
Take your stereo out and replace the factory. Keep your SCTXCAL 2 and return the F150 to stock. Use your SCT to tune the PSD. (I did and I love it) Either have Mike and team do new tunes for you or use Innovative Diesel.
With the newer PSD's hitting the market the 7.3 will slide in value more...so I would take a hard look at that.
Ok, long post and it may not make sense but if it was me, I would get something newer.

Cobra, if you pass on this deal, let me know. I'd be VERY interested in it, especially at that price, and would be willing to trade. I'm sure my truck would suit her nicely too... Also, continuing what RollingRock said, don't get an 03 6.0 PSD.
I am looking into trading my 350 dually for a 150 too. A lot of people bought these trucks when diesel was 50 to 75 cents a gal cheaper than gas. The 350 will get up to 14 mpg empty.
I have been asking and this is pretty much standard. At 75mph you will only get 10 or 12mpg if the 350 has 4.10s Maintenance is higher too as everything is bigger. (16qts oil every 5k, 8k recomended I think)
On the bright side, I towed a 6500lb tractor on a 2500lb pintle hitch dozer trailer through east KY and still got 12mpg. I also stopped that rig easily with no trailer brakes(borrowed the trailer knowing they were out).
If your neighbor needs a daily driver and you need a tow beast then it is a win -win situation. . . both trucks have a similar trade in, but the 7.3 will retail higher!
Also, don't go for a 6.0L, the 7.3 was all around better. I had a student with 500,000 on one.
