Buy gears new. G2, Motive, & Yukon are decent product. They aren't too bad to purchase, its the install that is costly.

Majority of cost is install labor, so buying new gears would save a little coin, but might as well buy a kit brand new for a bit more.

I don't think I'd do a gear swap on a 13 year old truck without master install kits.

I get 13-14 mpg pulling my 9k pound horse trailer. If your going to pull it a lot, then a diesel may be something to think about.

The more I think about the costs, the age of the truck and what I want to do with it, I think it might be cheaper in the long run to upgrade to a newer F250. Thanks for all the great info! I'm going to have to give this some more thought.

It won't be cheaper to upgrade to a diesel, which you don't necessarily need unless you are really going to be towing heavy. Diesel will get better fuel mileage than gas, but the price of diesel is higher and maintenance costs are higher. The stronger chassis and driveline is what makes any Super Duty a better tow vehicle. A gas V-10 will pull almost as well as a diesel and get similar gas mileage to what you are getting now.
