Flowmaster series advice for si/so stock cats
Flowmaster series advice for si/so stock cats
A buddy has a Flowmaster on his 5.4 but has no clue what series it is & I couldnt read a # on it, but although I normally am not a fan of the 'dronemaster' I think it sound pretty decent on these trucks.
the PO of my 05 5.4 truck installed a dynomax super turbo & honestly its quieter than stock compared to the 5.4s I've heard. (But a slight deeper tone)
I want something thats adds a bit of rumble but isnt obnoxious & I (obviously am not looking for performance gains or I wouldn't have went with a flowmaster, let alone stock cats & single si/so muffler)
Seeing as the factory cats reduce alot of sound I dont want to make the mistake of the PO purchasing a muffler that is too mild and will end up sounding the same as factory.
I know normally any 40 series (even deltaflow) is quite aggressive, but seeing as its just single exhaust & stock cats would it tame it down to a mild level? Ive listened to a ton of youtube videos but mainly all you can get is the tone, hard to tell how loud it actually is. (just like if I put a mic up to the dynomax on my truck it would sound great because it has a nice deep tone ...but only if you have your ear right up to it because its so quiet.) To sum it up, just wondering what series you flowmaster guys would recommend that would be slightly more aggressive than stock

I have 50 series delta flow and love them, they have nice sound but not so lound you get a headache and 50 series delta flow have way less interior noise then the 40 series do. Have wife and two kids so i love it. Show that installed mine after i ordered it from jegs never carried it till they installed mine and now they carried that series. They didnt think it would sound as good as it does.
Funny how flowmaser is mentioned and none of the big names on here are to be heard of.
Anyways, the 40's sound just fine, I run 40s on my 75 and ran a 44 on my 96 till it started to have a little too much rust on it from ohio weather and took it off. Anything you get from then I'd get in a center in/center out configuration though.

I have listed here a muffler shootout test done by CAR CRAFT:
MUFFLER Idle dB WOT dB
DynoMax Super Turbo 89 123
DynoMax Race Magnum 94 133
Flowtech Afterburner 92 124
Hooker Competion 92 122
Hooker Super Competion 90 125
Summit Turbo 89 124
Summit Fully Welded 92 125
Thrush Boss Turbo 90 123
Thrush Magnum Glasspack 92 128
All mufflers were dyno-tested on a 355-cube SBC with 10.0:1 compression, Air Flow Research 190 aluminum heads, a CompCams 292 hyd. a Victor Jr. intake, a Holley 750-cfm double-pumper, and 1 5/8 Headman headers.
Allied resonators (that sell for $30-$40 each and available at any muffler shop) installed in independent test flowed 90%+ of a "race spec muffler". Others using other brands consistently showed similar results. They come in a variety of sizes, lengths (10" to 34" IIRR), have a very nice deep tone, rumble on acel/decel and last. Been usng them for 30+ years...never an issue.

The 50 series Flowmaster holds the best tone out of all Flowmaster mufflers hands down. I feel its flowpath is a little too much and too open, but it has that legendary Flowmaster sound that these 2 and 1 chamber mufflers from them cannot recreate no matter how much they try.
OP, you sound like you are in need of a 50 series delta flow.
Very good looking truck if I may say
. Your tires & level look great.

I have a 99 5.4 w/ the flowmaster super 44 and 3" piping w/ stock cats. It sure does have some drone at 2000rpm, but otherwise its not too bad. Its decently loud, but you can only get so loud with stock cats. My sister and neighbors have complained, but i dont think its too loud. Here's a video for reference.

thanks for the suggestions of the 50 series...I dont get why they have like 5 different models of 50 series lol, the 50 Deltaflow, Bigblock, SUV, Super 50, HD (couldn't they just give them a different number or name, makes it a little confusing) I will do a little more homework on all the different 50 series options and see what the main differences are

I had a 40 series 3inch si/so exiting in the stock location and it wasn't that bad at all. It didn't drone much either, but I have screw 6.5 foot bed and it was near rear axle, so maybe it was just far enough away from the cab where I couldn't hear it. In fact it wasn't loud enough and I switched to a dynomax bullet.
Had a Flowmaster 50 Delta on my GMC and thats whats going on the Ford in a few weeks.Everyone loved the way the truck sounded on the outside yet I was able to drive my wife and kids around with no drone inside the cab.
Thanks for all the info, in the end I got a killer deal on a muffler from a buddy that happened to have a set of Super 40s (he changed his mind to another series) so for $50 I couldn't refuse.
Now for the funny part.... I am thinking my cats might be extremely plugged or something?? Because I just installed it tonight and... its basically just as quiet as the Dynomax Super turbo, hardly noticed a difference.
I am not that upset about it because I was worried they were going to be too loud for my liking... I stopped by my buddys place that has a similar truck to mine & his stock muffler is louder than this flowmaster

Then that is why it is still quiet, those 4 cat systems are a volume killer, which is what they were designed to do to keep passengers in a quiet comfort ride.
Chop out the rear cats and replace with pipes and leave the front O2 monitored cats. No CEL, and you won't get over how much louder it can be.

Makes sense. Ill have to think about it for a bit, if I remove them I have a feeling it might be too loud for me (er the wife)...from what I see from your videos it seems substantial, does sound good though.
in hindsight if I would have known the extra set of cats muffled the noise that much probably could have left the mild dynomax muffler on and just removed the cats, probably would have been just right.
...on another note after this muffler swapping, something that doesnt make any sense to me is why the hell the factory mufflers are so massive and heavy for these trucks, longevity maybe? Ford could have saved a ton of money on materials by just putting a small standard 14" muffler seeing as the dynomax super turbo and Flowmaster Super 40 are even quieter than the tank of a muffler they put on it behind those 4 cats.
