Muffler advice, what is my stock pipe size? *DONE!*

Looking at getting a decent sounding muffler on the cheap. Just looking for a little more rumble.

I have a bone stock 99 5.4 V8 F150. What is the stock diameter of the pipe? Is it 2.5"?

I was looking at getting a Flowmaster Super 44 possibly and it shows for this truck 2.5" in and 2.5" out offset. Is this right?

Cheapest online I found one was $63 w/free shipping.

I want to just swap the muffler and have the tip come out right before the rear wheel. (save some money on the extra pipe).

Would you recommend this route or not? Looking to stay under $150 if at all possible. (muffler and install).

I do not want a raspy sound though. All the vids on youtube I have looked at sounded pretty good.

Screw that flowmaster idea and get a 12" dynomax bullet. Cheaper and much better sounding!

go under your truck, bring a tape measure with you, put it against the pipe you should be able to tell if it's 2.5 or whatever. Too easy

Well, just found a great deal on Amazon for the bullet. $37 free shipping. Could not pass it up.

Now I just need to determine if I want it to come out before or after the rear tire. Does it make a sound difference? Does having a shop add that much more pipe cost a lot? I guess I could just re-use my old pipe and add a tip on the end?

What do you guys recommend?

Whatever you do be careful on putting it before rear tire because it will be real loud inside. My old '04 with 45'd out the rear was loud inside as is lol. Sounded awesome.

Reuse stock pipe and get a 4 inch tip (2.5 to 4 either 12 or 18 inch long) to throw on there. Good buy on the bullet, got mine from amazon as well. 50 bucks install cost to swap mine from the flowmaster I had on it.

You could have the bullet welded in place of the stock muffler. Then have them put a new tip on the end of the stock pipe.

If you want it louder have it exit before the tire, shouldn't be much of a difference in price. Like Darren said it can get old, especially if you drive on the highway frequently.

So will that be the biggest difference? Just the inside drone? I do tow a small boat on the weekends (well, once it warms up), so there will be some highway there. Other than that all I have is a 3 mile commute. Is it really that bad? I don't mind hearing it inside, but I don't want a headache. Wife and 7 year old will be in it as well. But I do want a nice loud growl.

Yes inside drone will be the biggest difference.

IMO the 97-03 5.4's are not very loud even without a muffler.

I guess I could always keep the stock rear section if I go in front of the tire and put it back on if its too loud inside... Love the look of it coming out at the tire. But if you guys say it will just be miserable I won't. Only highway will be like every other weekend. 1-2 hour drives.

I think it will be fine exiting before the rear tire. If it's too loud you can always have the stock tail pipe section put back on.

I believe that's because the 97-03's had a 4 cat system with 2 pre-cats and then the normal cats. Which is extremely annoying. 2004+ had only 2 cats.
Also to OP i have the same truck with a Super 44 and will be switching to a Dynomax bullet in about a month or so. Good buy on your part not going with the Super 44. I wasn't disappointed but i still want it louder. If you wan't it louder too I'd say switching to 3" piping from y-pipe back (cost me $150). It was a very noticable increase in sound and i have not noticed to much low end power loss.

2004 nbs still had 4 cats, so did first production line 2005 models. Then when they were looking to cut costs they designed the more normal and larger 2 cat system.
