You want it louder for free? Cut the tail pipe off right at the end of the muffler and DO NOT put a turn down on it. It will be louder inside/out, deeper, and more aggressive sounding. Don't believe me? Try it!

I believe it. I gave my friend Super 40s for his 2003 Silverado a few christmas seasons ago. He had a cheap shop install it all and his tailpipes rotted off the outlets last winter. That thing with a 5.3L running dual Super 40s without tailpipe is louder than how my old truck was with cut out rear cats, duals and Bullets.

Why does the lack of turndown make it louder if it's still "dumped" under the truck?

Turndown sends the noise directly into the ground thus not allowing it to amplify and expand. When my MBRP kit came lose at the muffler it was insanely loud in the truck.

The sharp 90 degree piece of pipe kills sound. With out it, the sound is forced directly out of the second chamber with nothing else in it's way. Why wouldn't it be louder or sound better?

No loss of power, and yes it will still sound better. The properties of noise cancellation is still the same here, just a single exit instead of dual exit.
