So, CAI on stock tune

A bad idea?

why? Running to lean? does anyone have any links to or know some one who has had engine faluire/damage from a CAi on a stock tune.

I was looking at a few, wantd to know before I buy one, plan on getting a PHP tuner come tax time, and I cant wait to get it.

The serious lean problem was with the 2004 and 2005 5.4 3v. That does not mean that an occasional 2006 up has not been lean without a custom tune. But, is it really worth it? Without a custom tune, you are adding maybe 8 hp, with a custom tune, maybe 15 or 16 hp. Why take the risk for that kind of gain?

If you are intent on doing it, most likely, you will be fine, I just tend to be very cautious.

Oh, thanks, you are always so hlepfull.

I was thinking of getting it now, or at the same time as the PHP tuner, I wonder how much I could gain total, I know I dont have the best exhaust setup, but geting rid of that massive stock mullfer had to gain me a little.

I found a K7N kit for $330, a roush for $8 more or a Ebay job for $128, figure I might as well get the roush if I can when I get the PHP gyphon ( sp? )

In the end its not so much the power as it is the MPG, before I went from 235 to 245 tires I was getting 17.9, I hope to be still geting 17.9 but i havnet filld up yet again, and I did a lot of crusing with the new tires and exhaust.

I would like to see if I could break into the 19 MPG range if not 20 with the CAI and the tuner.

bigger tires really eat into mileage. the tuner will help offset it
keep in mind that your calculation will be off if the tire is taller and you have not recalibrated the PCM.

I think my tires are wider and not taller?

I went from 230/70/17 to 245/70/17, so thats wider not taller? not that much wider though its still has stock rims

it is wider.. but the 70 is a ratio, so your tires are slightly taller

oh, I learned some thing, thanks.

I noticed when I filled up last time that I was getting right at 13, from 17.9 BUT, I had spent a lot of time cruising the plaza with the new tires and exhaust, and lots of little short trips.

i was getting 17.9, I am going to hope for at least 16 still.

You can go to www.discounttire.com and they have a calculator under the tire section. You can compare sizes of tires, it will tell you how much taller, percent of change, etc.

was bored and your new tire is about a half inch taller than your old.

taken from the miata.net tire calculator... 'your speedo is reading 1.8% slower than it did with your stock tires. When your speedo says 60mph, your actually going 61.1'
