2.25" I believe. I think some tend to go 2.5" due to the sound preference.

So should I have a shop cut out all the existing pipes right after the cats and start 2.25 from there or should I start that size right before/after the X-pipe?

After the cats would be best. Some people start with 2.25" cats but end up with CELs.

my 08 f150 5.4L has 2.25" true duals starting after the cats and an x-pipe, and no mufflers. good performing, the sound is deffinetly not as loud as 2.5" tho.

Well, I'm all about performance first and sound second.... most of the time.

One more question:

Would hi-flow cats improve performance significantly over OEM cats (2 OEM cat configuration).

Magnaflow hi-flow cats flow 44% better than OEM, you will gain in economy, and performance.

Ok, how about a single exhaust, would 3" single be an ok option? I have a 5.4 expedition.

For single exhaust 3" is best performing.

I hate to sound ignorant but dual 2.25's would perform better than a single 3 right?
