Cold Air Intake Or Regular Intake?
I want to install a cold air intake to increase horsepower and for better fuel economy. I have been reviewing different intakes and have a question. Which would you guys prefer, cold air or regular intakes? The price is quite different. I want a cold air intake.
You mean an open type versus an enclosed type? Which one's specifically are you looking at? I read as much as I could on here especially from those I consider to be "discriminating" modders and narrowed it to the S&B (mostly enclosed I believe) or the Air Force One (open). I have the AF1 and am completely happy with it and it sounds like those with the S&B are as well. BUT read more here and decide whether you need to get a tune for your truck based on which intake you choose. Do not just go buy a high flow intake and stick it on without being sure it will not cause a lean condition.

I recently upgraded my truck with bigger and wider tires, therefore my truck is heavier and needs more horsepower.

My experience is that the negatives I read about open types (i.e. not protective enough from engine heat and mud/etc.) are a non issue for me. I live in south fla and due to what I do with my truck I would have noticed the engine heat thing already which I have not. As far as mud or whatever, just take a look in the drivers front corner of the engine bay. Do you see it all dirty and slopped up on the stock intake tube? I think for 99% of people this is a non-issue, but if you plan on seeing just how deep of water or mud you can drive through then it may be something to consider (as would be a swamp buggy).
There are several dyno charts of real peoples trucks here (not the dealer websites) with the S&B and AF1 set ups and they look very good but most have other performance enhancements as well.
What's up guys. New to the forums with new 07 FX2. I really liked the S&B intake but all this about running lean has held me from buying it. My previous truck had the evolution, K&N CAI, and Magna and seemed to work great, never tested to see if it was running lean though. I want the same set up but just with the S&B, but will it work without damaging the engine. If not what do you suggest? Is it really bad to be running lean just driving within the city? Thanks

MGD is right, as usual, that these are more ambient air intakes as far as air temperature goes. It's more a question of increasing and easing the flow within the parameters that the pcm can adjust for.
I put on the 3" AF1 back in March and it's been on all summer, though this was a mild summer in Austin, but still.. temps in the high 90's didn't affect the performance one bit.
I'd be a bit wary of running the Edge with any non-stock intake unless you can measure your A/F ratios and compensate via tuning. Especially at El Paso altitude/temperature/smog levels..
I am new at the intake thing. I realize the purpose of installing an intake, but other than that I really don't know all the details of them. Please explain the difference between these two AF1 intakes: (1- AF1 3" and 2- AF1 3.5")
