SI/SO Exhaust

Just got a 2006 XLT supercrew 5.4L and I love it, my second F150. My other was a 2000 XLT supercab 4.6L....great truck but the new one is a major upgrade. Heres my question I was just looking to add a Super 40 Series Flowmaster and rip off the wimpy muffler Ford gave it. How would that sound? Looking for a good deep tone but not too loud. Any input or if anyone has recorded what that sounds like I'd love to take a listen....Thanks!!!

I have a 2001 F150 SCrew with the 5.4, and I was thinking of just adding a Flowmaster or Gibson exhaust in place of the stocker and keeping the rest of the stock piping. So I am also interested in how this will sound and if any HP or mileage gains could be expected??

Thanks.

Wow. That sounds really nice. Although it's probably still a little louder than I am looking for. So that was just a Banks muffler installed in place of the stocker and using the stock piping?? Also - did you notice and HP or mileage gains/changes?

Thanks.

I agree...I have the Magnaflow 16612 cat back system and it has a deep base when giving the truck gas but settles down when going into overdrive...

Whatever system you choose you will be much happier with a three inch pipe. The added expense is really not that great unless you go with a mandrell bent pipe. From the Y back, mine was basically straight, thus, they connected the old pipes into a neck that made it 3 inches (stainless) and brought it out just behind the right rear wheel. Sounds great and does add lots of jip. If you only change the muffler, the benefits you are looking for will be minimal. You probably should think of an intake system. These two mods really make a difference. My next mods are most likely fans.

Best of luck on your choice of procedures and what a great truck you choose.

Mert

The Flowmasters are typically known to be the louder of the aftermarket mufflers (excluding glass packs and cherry bombs). With a 2.5" or 3" set-up exiting out the back, your truck will have an awesome sound The Magnaflows are nice also and have a much tamer sound. I started with the Mags. and rear exit tips then switched to the Flows, 3" mid pipe and side exit in front of the rear tire. My 9 year old son loves it when I set off car alarms. Ah, a chip off the old block.

I had my local shop install a Magnaflow (with stock piping) on my rig today. It wasn't nearly as loud as I expected though. Still sounds much better than stock and seems to have a little more pep. Could be my imagination about the pep though, I suppose. Hopefully, my magnaflow will open up a little in a week or two and give a little bit more growl, as some have reported happens after the initial "break in" period for a new exhaust. If not, I can always go to a 3" exit piping with a bigger tip. That should louden it up somewhat.

They put an 18" on. If you want a little louder go with a 14" with a 3" exit pipe and tip. Or go for a flowmaster 40. But when I listened to all the clips on the respective sites, the magnaflow sounded the best (to me) and also not quite as loud. I didn't expect the stock piping to quiet it down quite as much as it did. Hopefully it will open up a little bit after "break in".

I've put about 400 miles on my rig since I had the Maggie installed, and it seems to have opened up a bit and has a little bit lower sounding growl now. Not too lound, but sounds nice to me. No drone or anything either. I'm pretty happy with it so far.
