Post What did you replace when you did your new exhaust?

I am considering putting a new exhaust on my 98 XLT 4.2L. I have read and seen people that have changed the entire exhaust from the cat's back and others that have only replaced the mufflers. My initial thought is to replace everyting but with a V6, moving to a 3 inch pipe will probably cause a loss of low end torque, and I think the stock pipes are 2 1/2 inches. Which would you do? All or just the muffler.

Thanks

Randy

I did just the muffler (flowmaster) and I am satisfied with the sound and performance. The cost was pretty nice too - about $80.00 installed.

No matter what you do bcak there you will lose some low end. I like the Super Truck I just had done. Still out from Cat at 2.5 inches. Good thing is you can keep the stock system intack with this option and replace it if you don't like it. 280 buck however but really nice.

I replaced just the muffler (Magnaflow). Sounds like a V8 at idle, but after that you can tell it's a 6.

Guys, I appreciate your solutions but I would like to know some reasonings behind your decisions.

Thanks

Will the Supertruck kill a substantial amount of low end? Is there any set-up that would boost low-end? Thanks in advance....Doc

Cost was one reason, and I really didn't think the V6 would pick up that much HP or TQ from a dual system so I took the money I saved an bought a Superchip.

Forgeur, I think a 3" cat back for the 4.2 would be a mistake. I'd just go with a good hi-flow muffler. Go to the thread, "Which to Buy, Gibson or Flowmaster" Lot of good info there.

I think 3" on a V6 would be a mistake as well. I just got 3" single put on my 5.0 '92 with Headers and Flowmaster 50 series. Got rid of the cat. converter too. Much better pull through all the gears, a little less response off the line, and it stumbles a bit and bucks at low speed in town. Could be not enough backpressure maybe. But for a V6 a 3" would be overkill in my opinion.

No doc_150 I think it will hardly be noticable. Unless you tow near the upper limits. This one is not recommended for heavy towing for that reason. I put it on a 4.6L and haven't noticed any change but I only tow below 2500 pounds. It takes advantage of your 2.5 inch stock cat out pipe. I liked most the reversability of the whole thing.

Question

Obliterator,
I've noticed, you're the second person in as many days that has removed their CAT.

I guess I'm just getting old but these things are there for a reason. I guess up there where you're at it isn't a crime?

I just had to say something about it...

Carry on...

Mark
