Odometer

I have a 2000 Expedition with a digital odometer. The odometer is on it's way out, it reads sometimes, and then other times you can only read some numbers on it. The dealer said it's not under warr. and i would have to replace it for like $300 or more. I called my local junk yard and they said they have one used for $125. My question is my Expedition has 64,500 miles on it, the one the junk yard has 78,000 miles on it. This is the whole cluster that i'm gonna replace. When i put the one in that has 78,000 miles on it will it read my real milage of 64,500. I just want to know, because i don't want to waste my money, any help would be great.

The digital odometers are tied to a "chip" in the cluster. You should/could be able to swap the chip. If not, the digital odometers CAN be reprogrammed by a dealer with the right equipment (seen it done). For the piece of mine and possible re-sale value (or "odometer descrepancy" warning on title) issue, I would spend the extra for the new one at the dealer that would be properly programmed.

Just my $0.02............

Yes you can buy a exchanged cluster from the dealer and have it programmed for mileage and PATS.
Or you can take a chance that the cluster from a salvage yard is okay and use only the display board of the odometer section. This board has a ribbon connection to the main circuit board of the cluster, you will also see a 33 ohm 5 watt resistor piggybacked on the display board. Check that resistor for discoloration or overheating symptoms.

Yup! There is a program procedure you can do yourself, but its my opinion that this is a part that just should be replaced at a dealer. It would be worth the extra money for the piece of mind to me.

see my post on harley cluster exchange you can just change the display on your cluster from salvage yard. the ODO info is on the main PCB (the large board in the back where the ribbion cable plugs in. The Entire cluster can be swapped out and your correct ODO reading will stay the same and the truck will start if you use your PCB

This is correct. If you just put in another cluster, the PATS system will produce a "no start" signal. It would need reprogrammed. Swap your PCB into the bone yard cluster and you should be good to go. (Or just put the display from the boneyard into your cluster leaving all your stuff there.)
