odometer

Hi,
Having a small problem with my odometer. Somtimes when I start my F-150 the odometer is unlight. After 10 or 15 mins of driving it comes back on. It never seems to miss any km's but it is a pain. By the way it comes off and on I think it may be just a losse wire somewhere. Any help on were to start would be great!
Thanks,
Paul

Welcome to F150OnLine!

I have an 98 F150 that does not have the digital odometer; however it seems that this is not a rare problem. The general consensus runs to the entire dash module needs to be replaced.

I have a different opinion, but without anyone actually trying it I can neither confirm nor deny it. Here goes...

Fading odometer/gauges in vehicles with digital componets are not uncommon. I have successfully repaired them in both GM and Chrysler products in the past. In all cases it was due to poor electical connections on the resistors that drive the components. To end this debate once and for all somebody is going to have to pull the gauge cluster(no small task) and inspect the connections paying close attention to large OHM resistors ( 100+). Resoldering those connections should correct the problem.

The book answer from the dealer will be replace the module, big buck$. That was the answer I got from GM with my wife's car. I fixed her odometer in less than an hour for nothing.

So there are 4 ways to go with this.
1-Be the man that attempts to repair it yourself, and become a hero to the F150 community.
2-Wimp out and buy a new cluster
3-Bring your truck to my house and let me tear it apart.
4-Start a fund to allow me to purchase a newer modle truck and tear it down.

Good Luck!

just replaced my cluster with a harley cluster. I did have to take the entire cluster apart to figure out where the info is stored for the rap. It is in the main board on back of the cluster. The LCD readout is on its own PCB held in by two torx screws and a ribbion cable. the reason for intermitant blackouts my very well be a loose ribbion cable or a faulty display. The LCD for the ODO contains no information and is driven by information stored on the main pcb that piggybacks to the gage instrumention. I checked this by trying the new cluster board in my truck first which had zero miles on it but truck did not start. when I put my old main PCB from the orginal cluster with the new cluster the truck started and my ODO had the correct info. I would suspect then that a multitude of ford ODO displays from f150s and other models possibly might be scavanged for the LCD display only saving the cost of purchasing a new cluster.
