changing intrument cluster
changing intrument cluster
i would like to remove the stock instrument cluster (has no tach, its an 99 XL pickup)and replace it with a tach one. Has anybody ever done this before? I have electronic odometer too, Thanks
Hi Bspan Welcome
I recently saw this "How to install aftermarket tach" 99XL etc.
www.f150world.com
It has been done and posted here. Do a search for more info. If you change to factory instru.panel with tach...the PATS does have to be reprogrammed. It may take a FORD svc. dept to do that? I dont recall if mileage stays or starts from 0- w/new cluster?
Good luck...OT

cluster info
thanks for the info, i did check out that website and joined there too. But he was were i am now except, i really want a regular display not an aftermarket tach. Well, i gess i cant have everything!
Hi Bspan
Try www.fordpartsonline.com
Sometime ago...they listed a instru. gauge cluster with tach.
Your local Ford dealer (parts) should be able to get you one $$$
Someone hear posted they got one from a wrecked late model F150...problem was...his old key would not start truck...Thats because of the PATS in new cluster was not same as old cluster.
I dont recall exactly...its either the PATS in cluster or chipped key or both together that require reprogram.
Maybe you'll get a reply from those guys?
Of course...even with new cluster/tach..you may still have to run a wire from pcm to tach...if so...that "how to install" will come in handy. I dont recall...but wire could be there?
You do have choices/options.
Good luck...OT
BTW...i just use the digital ODO (test mode) when i really want to know rpm..you may have done same?

hey old timer
thanks for the reply, well I think that it is all ready wired, i have put the display in test mode there is a tach number there that is displayed were it reads and displays the eng. rpm. really cool to do , that would be fine for me, but you have to put it in test mode everytime you start your truck and thats not good. But I will check out that site and see what i fine out. I will keep in touch......bspan
i email them at the ford online store, about cruise and instrument info, will let you know.......thanks

Replacing instrument cluster will require use of service tool to program new cluster to powertrain control module. The PCM needs to "learn" new instrument cluster in order for it to allow truck to start.
