Backup lights not working!!!!

I was looking at my backup lights a couple days ago and they were not working. i tried looking at some forums and i do just not understand. if you could try to help me and dumb it down for me to understand, that would be great. i do not understand anything about electrical systems because i’m a novice towards the car field. i checked the fuse and it was connected so i’d assume not that. anything helps, thank you!!!!!

It would help if you identified what you're working on....

If you very slowly move the shift lever through all the ranges, do the backup lights ever blink on, even momentarily? Will the engine start in P and N, but no other positions? Have you checked the bulbs?

Column shift or floor shift? Sounds like your linkage is loose or out of alignment or the DTRS (digital transmission range sensor) which is also the neutral safety switch is bad, loose, or out of alignment. Are you stepping on the brake when trying to start it?
