Door Unlock Problem 2013 FX4

I bought a 2013 Supercab FX4 about 2 months ago. I am having an unusual problem with the door locks/handle only when I'm unlocking it.

I unlock the vehicle. This can be either by the keyfob, the numbered keypad, or the key directly in the lock. I can hear the mechanism in the door functioning (sounding like it's opening) and I can see the button pop up successfully each time. I go to lift the handle to open the door and it does not open on the first lift, but the door will always open on the second lift.

This is an intermittent issue and only happens about 50% of the time. It only seems to happen on the drivers side.

Also, if you unlock then lock continuously to try to simulate the problem, and try to open, it seems to always work fine. But when the truck has been sitting for a while (like overnight), the first time you try, the problem often happens.

This just started happening a week ago.

Any ideas? Thanks!

this is a fairly common problem on '09+ trucks mainly on driver's side but sometimes passenger also. Dealer will adjust locking mechanism and is good to go. I've been living with it for two years now, but won't take it in because my inner door panel is layered up with sound deadening.

That's a common problem but your dealer will say that he's never seen it or heard of it before and say that it works fine for them until AFTER the warranty expires and then they'll find it but want to charge you hundreds for the repair. Speaking from experience :-(

Thanks alot for your responses. Appreciate it! I have an appointment next week.

When I explained it to them over the phone, they said they had never heard of the problem before.

Just like joe51 (above) said!

All dealers have VERY poor hearing!

I'm the original poster and I picked up my truck from the dealer today. Here's how it went:

1st phone call early in the day - I ask if the truck is ready for pickup. He says yes. I ask did you find anything wrong with the door lock mechanism. He says no they could not simulate the problem or find anything wrong. I ask if they took the door panel off to see if there was anything to adjust. He says no. I get a bit angry and say how upset I am, new expensive truck...etc. He says he'll talk to the technician more about it.

2nd phone call a few hours later - Miraculously the dealer found a "bulletin" relating to the exact problem I'm having with the door lock. This leads him to "perform door handle to latch rod adjustment".

I pick up the truck and the door lock seems to be working fine but only time will tell.

I think they shot WD40 or something in mine after "they couldn't find a problem" (see above). It worked for a couple of months but then started acting up again. However now it's out of warranty :-(

Hoch,

Can you get a copy of the bulletin and post it here? Or at least the bulletin number. That way others can refer to it when trying to get their's fixed.

I called the dealer and he emailed me the bulletin and number.

Unfortunately after less than 1 week of having the fix done, the problem is back. It might be worse now because when I pull up on the handle, it grinds or seems to get stuck part way. And then with a bit of extra force, it opens. Of course this is intermittent. So back to the dealer. Inconvenience - not happy at all!

But here's the bulletin so the rest of you have something to quote when the dealer says he's never heard of the issue:

[I]OASIS SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGE NUMBER: 32266

Youre welcome Joe. The problem is still happening. It now is back to needing 2 pulls to open. But happens almost every time so I'm sure the dealer will see this.

I spoke to them a few days ago and instead of doing the "adjustment" again, they are consulting with engineering. Which means they are going to talk to Ford Canada regarding what to do next. I'll keep you all posted in case they come up with some new fix. Like replacing the door lock mechanism entirely!

Just got my '13 FX2 back from the dealer for the double pull issue when unlocking the drivers door. I tried it 3 times at the dealer and once since then. So far so good. Usually it would fail 90% of the time. When I get home, I'll update this post with part # info.

Considering how long door locks have been in use in vehicles, you would think they would know how to do one right by now. I never take my vehicle to the stealership unless I have to. I never buy new though either. I have a general rule of never buying a vehicle that costs as much or more than my house.
