Question Reverse Camera Power

To start this off, I apologize if this is in the wrong area. Please feel free to move the post to an area which may fit my question better.

I checked the audio/video section but was not finding what I was looking for.

Anyways, I am in the midst of installing a backup camera in my 2004 F150 FX4. I ran the video cable all the way to the tailgate (camera is next to the plate). Currently, I am looking for a power source. I know I could tap into the reverse lights if needed, but then its only operable when in reverse, whereas if I have a constant power source, I can turn it on and off at any time. (Not sure why I need that but the idea intrigues me.)

Where do you think I could get a constant power source from, and whats the best way to run the wires?

Has anyone else installed an aftermarket camera in their truck? Any tips/advice/pictures would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Rob

If i'm not mistaken I believe there is a power supply with the trailer plug in (the one that's not the 3 pin the bigger one) you would have to look up which one is power.

Just tap into that and you will have power (you could also use one of them as a ground too)

Thanks! I'm guessing that a trailer does not have to be plugged in, in order for the power to be supplied to the socket? This sounds like a good method as opposed to the reverse light.

Correct - the trailer does not have to be plugged in. This is how I powered my reverse camera BTW (except I only wanted the camera on in reverse, so I used the center reverse power pin).
