Backup Camera with a Switch
Backup Camera with a Switch
Hi guys, glad to be hear and experience all the knowledge available. This is what I'm looking at doing. I have a Pioneer AVH P3200BT and I just bought a backup camera with LED Lighting. I want to be able to flip a switch and be able to see it on the radio without having to leave it on all the time. I also want it to work automatically when I go in reverse. Thirdly, when I have the switch on, I want to interrupt the circuit when I shift into reverse. I drew up the scheme that I think will work, and wanted to see what you guys thought.

I also added a couple drawings of the poles on the relay because I know I couldn't remember them off the top of my head.
This picture would be with the switch closed, and not in reverse.

This picture would be with the switch closed, but shifted in reverse.

Not sure I can really help you, my son is the brains behind my system. But FYI, here is what we installed just today actually...
Actually installed a head unit in September for my birthday. But today installed a factory Ford tail gait camera. Wired it to the HU camera input and there was also a wire to hook a wire we ran from reverse light so that will automatically toto camera when put truck in reverse. We also routed wiring through a DPDT or something like that switch and will ad a front camera once I find one.
When the switch is in reverse position, rear cam will come on when shift in reverse. While moving forward, flip the switch to front cam and the radio will think truck shifted to reverse, auto switching to cam view, but will have activated front cam. We did try it with a old broken camera on the front, and did have some feed from the rear cam at same time, but I think it was due to tapping into the rear cam power wire to power the front cam.... It had been a long day and since we didn't have a mountable front cam we didn't bother further research.
Anyway, if you have any interest in this, or would like to discuss with my son, I will point him to this to respond.

I just bought my new truck; 2010 F150 SCrew XLT. My first NEW vehicle since 1973! I have been reading the F150 Forums and have picked up a lot of good information. I have already made the mirror reflector to LED modification.
My setup is a bit different. I plan to install an aftermarket backup camera/monitor system, I don't have the fancy radio or the OEM camera. I also want to able to switch between normal in reverse use for trailer hookup, etc., and a manual on demand, so I can monitor my trailer loads, etc. It's a low sided tilt bed. I have a simpler circuit design. I figure if I parallel the power connections for the camera and the monitor into a switch, between the normal B/U light power and a switched alternate source, I can do this without having the backup lights come on when in forward gear. (See diagram) At least I think it will work?
Feel free to blow holes in my design, suggestions welcome! I am not very good with electrical stuff...
Where would be a good place to get the alternate power connection?
Thanks in advance

I might try that. I can turn the camera on via the radio, but I don't want a constant to the camera as it has led's on it, so I want the power to be switchable. This looks like it might work.
Why can't you just cut the switch into the LED circuit? You should only need them at night. The 3200 has a camera button on it. You can turn it on at any time.
The original circuit wont work. The relay wont be getting a proper ground with the reverse lights off. The concept is good tho. Heres my suggestion.. It uses a relay and 2 diodes. I forgot to draw in the trigger for the head unit, just use the output of the relay to the camera and use that.
When I did mine, I simply hooked my reverse input wire from the stereo to the center pole of a single pole/double throw switch. One of the other poles taps into your reverse wire for power, and the third pole taps into an accessory powered wire.
Flip the switch one way, the camera comes on in reverse. The other way, it comes on whenever.
My camera at the rear simply taps into my tail lights so it is powered up whenever my lights are on.
Keep it simple.

Ok, to make this simple and use a relay as you decided is necessary.
Take the:
86 to 12v ignition through a switch (SPST)
85 to ground
87 to the 12v ign
87a to the trucks reverse wire
30 to the reverse wire on the radio.
Then ground the and connect 12v ign to the camera and plug the video into the back of the HU.
