Question Dome light STUCK ON, need help

The dome light, door lights, and bed light in my 99 F-150 XLT SC 4.6L are all STUCK on. I brought it to a dealership and they had it for a week and supposedly could not figure out what was wrong. I simply took all the bulbs out and have been driving with no dome light or bed light. They said it definitely was not the door switches or the interior domelight switch. I think it may be a stuck relay, but Im not sure what part needs to be replaced. It may also be the timer that keeps the lights on for a certain amount of time. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this and figure out where the problem is since my local dealership wont help. Thanks

sorry can't help with a solution, but isn't your '99 still under warranty? if so drop it off at the dealer ask for a truck loaner and tell them to call when they have figured it out.
although, i may be wrong here but it seems the problem could be a shorted switch somewhere. i don't think it could be the timer because the door has to be open for the timer to work. or the dome light switch has to be left on. ( i think). a relay is a possibility as you mentioned, do you have a schematic of the truck? that should show where the relays are located.
sorry couldn't be of more assistance, good luck.

Here's a really basic thing to check. The thumbwheel that controls the brightness of the instrument panel lights, when turned all the way bright, will click and turn on all the courtesy lights. Roll the switch back down and the courtesy lights will go off.

TheSkippy,
I am having the exact same problem. My Door Ajar light, dome, door, and cargo lights stay on sometimes even when all of my doors are shut. However this is not always, sometimes everything works fine. When the lights do stay on, they only stay on for a little while and eventually just kick off. I am going to take it in to the dealer and have them replace the door ajar sensors.

stumpjumper,
Let me know how ya make out with replacing the sensors.I went out this morning ,sprayed my door latch with lubricant, per advice from redlariet, the door switch is located in the latch. Then I put my fuse back in,(took out so my dome light and cargo light wouldn't be on all night)My light situation was back to normal. But like you, this has happened before, just not as long as yesterday.Have you tryed spraying the switch?

No I have not yet sprayed the latch. I may try that tomorrow. You are saying that it did work for you? I am a bit curious.

I did spray that latch this morning and So far so good. The lights and sensors all seem to be properly opperating. But this problem has always been on and off, so we will soon see. Thank you...

I had the same problem with my 97. I soaked the latches (both sides) with WD-40 and it fixed it. Before I sprayed it, it was a consistant problem. After, it has not come back and that has been close to a year. I am about to soak them again for good measure.

I believe the sensor indicating the door is ajar is drying out.

Question

Same problem but intermittent, 97 4x4 lariat supercab. Door ajar light seems to be the key. the door ajar stays on when doors are closed but eventually goes off.
11-29-00, Sprayed the latches with WD-40, seems to have fixed the problem for now.

The GEM module and courtesy light relay
are in the Central Junction box. It appears
that the GEM has some control over energizing
this relay from looking at the wiring diagram, since it looks like the door
switches provide inputs to this module, not directly to the lights themselves. Might be a possibility, but if the courtesy lights DO go off at speed, it would not seem that the GEM or the relay would be at fault.

Hey guys I think I can help. I'm the parts mgr at my family's ford dealer and we replace about 10 switchs a month. If you cant get the dome light and door adjar light on the dash to go out by spraying WD40 into the latch at the end of the door you will have to replace the switch in the latch.

I have seen a couple screws thru the wrong hole in the dome lamp. take it down and double check.
