Head light and fog light issues...please help.

A little help please.

Last night, after pulling my brother out of a snow drift, my head lights and fog lights started acting wierd. I don't know if I knocked some wires loose or got something too hot, but the timing could be just a coinsidence. Anywho...if I just have my parking lights on w/ my fog lights, they work fine except that the bright light indicator is dimly showing on my dash. It's the same if my headlights are on with the fog lights. Then, when I turn on my brights everything shuts off, but the parking lights and the bright light indicator glows brighter...like it should. I recently switched to Nikkon 7000k bulbs in the fog lights to match the brighter head lights that were in the truck when I bought it.

Any ideas?

Do you mean the high beams don't work ?

Usually when the high beam indicator is glowing, the fog lamp relay is not finding ground via the high beam element, and is using the indicator in the cluster.

I do not have the thread bookmarked, but there is a thread by me that has the write up on changing the ground for the fog lamp relay, so the fogs work at all times. Right now the search function is not working, so I cannot pull up the thread.

Yeah, I guess its just the fact that my high beams don't work and when my fogs are on the high beam indicator dimly glows.

So, I switched out the high beam fuse relay hoping that would fix it...but it didn't. Why would it be that easy, right?

Did you replace the relay or the fuse ?

Did you check the bulbs to see if the high beam elements are burnt out ( meter the socket ).

I didn't look at the fuse, I figured that if the indicator on the dash is illuminated then the fuse is fine...right?

I haven't looked at the bulbs, but what are the chances that they blew together?

I live in Iowa, and its so cold here right now that I can only work on it for a few minutes at a time. I'll have it out at my parents tonight in their garage and can look it over a little more closely.

Actually for the issue you are seeing, the fuse & relay have nothing to do with it.
The Fog lamp relay derives ground from the high beam element in the bulb.

what are the chances that they blew together?
Low but not unheard of. Falls under the column of possible not probable.

If you want to change the fog lamp relay so it operates with the high beams, this should stop the issue you are seeing ( search is working again ) :

Well...good news, it was a simple fix. The high beam element in the left side bulb had blown. I didn't realize that if an element blew in one bulb, the other wouldn't work. I replaced both...for $52 (good times), and all is well.

Thanks for all of your help/info SSCULLY!
