Reverse lights
Reverse lights
Im thinking about making a set of reverse lights that will slide on over the 2" hitch. I've seen some out there like this but they are plastic, i'd like to have if made of steel this way it wont break offroadin. Which wires on the 4/7 plug on the truck will give me power to hook up reverse lights only. i dont want to tap any wires because this is going to be moved between 2 trucks. If possible id like to use the 4 plug, but if its a must i will use the 7 plug. the trucks are a 2004 and 2005 f-150.
i have pictures of the plugs at my site http://www.aaron150.piczo.com
Thanks for any help
Aaron
Does the 2004-2005 have a round or blade 7 plug?

i permanently mounted mine. they only cost $15 from wallymart and i mounted them with a metal hose clamp around the receiver hitch frame.
if you have the 7 pin connector then the reverse circuit is the center wire. it has its own circuit with fuse and relay protection so using it will not over load the trans switch.
you will need to use the 7 pin connector because the 4/5 flat doesn't use the reverse circuit.
i just replace my 4 year old light because of corrosion but they look the same as my old ones in these pics.

Did you tap the wires to get power?if so which ones?the center one was used right?or does it just plug in the 7 plug? Does the lights come on when in reverse or are they controlled by a switch?im guessing when in reverse if it goes through the reverse relay? lol.
a new thought could i put a 3 way switch and have it so it comes on in reverse or i could turn it on when needed?
Thanks again for your help!!!

i cut the wire off the back of the plug and spliced it to the lights. it comes on when i put it in reverse only. i don't have back up lights on my trailer.
you can wire it anyway you want. its just a matter of running the wire and adding a relay and a switch. you could make it come on with the trans in reverse, all the time or not at all. just use a relay to control the lights.
i just didn't feel like going to that much trouble. i mounted the lights and spliced the wire and connected a ground and i was done.

I added the Truck Lite Single LED backup lamps to each side of the truck. These are directly wired to the trailer tow reverse circuit on the 7 pin adapter. The single LED draw 1 AMP each. On the trailer tow 7 pin adapter, they are isolated from the truck, so if there is a problem, it is not in the truck's wiring, it is seperated in what would be the trailer ( reason Ford seperates the wiring for the same function ). Problem diagnoses is the same on either, it is just your truck still works as normal in the mean time.
I had the Maxium knock offs on my '06 at first, but they were not that bright. When checking the corss ref again, Maxium brand calls them backup lamps, but they cross to the Truck Lite dome lamps. Replaced them with the Truck Lites on my '06.

This is where I spliced them at :
