Tailights Fuse Keeps Blowing

1998 F-150. 15 amp fuse (under steering column) keeps going out. No taillights, backup lights, rear signals or brake lights. Also when it goes out the ABS light starts flashing on the dashboard. The fuse went out recently and I replaced it - it worked for a week or so but now the fuse burns out immediately whenever I put a new one in. No other electrical problems (except the Cruise Control is out but I think that's probably a different animal). The guy at the auto parts store tells me it may be a bare wire in the taillight assembly. Any thoughts or clues guys? Sure would appreciate some good advice. Thanks!

Unplug the speed control deactivation switch under the hood on the master cylinder, replace the fuse, and drive directly to the nearest Ford dealer. Do not reconnect the SCDS until the recall service has been performed. Do not pass go, and do not collect $200.

That's where my money is....

...mine too...

At least the fuse is blowing instead of setting the truck on fire....

Hey Buddy -
Thanks for the great reply. I had NO IDEA it could be in that area! Will do as you suggested a.s.a.p. Thanks again!

I was about to post this exact same issue (I already did under 97 and older forum) the same fuse keeps blowing on me. I put a new one in, the hazards work and it blows I think when I hit the brake or something.

The fuse only controls my hazards and brake lights. To try and fool people (cops mostly) for the time being during the day, I just pull my lights on and twist the **** at the same time to turn on the 3rd light in the back when I brake.

Being a 1991 and the 2nd owner, I don't think I can have the recall performed. What do I need to do?

You have a different issue. If the 3rd brake light works, then your problem is most likely in the circuit at or past the MFS switch.

Your vehicle does not use the same circuitry as do the later versions (no SCDS).
