Cruise Control Not Working
Cruise Control Not Working
I have a 2001 Super Crew which I cannot get the cruise control to engage. The recall on the cruise has been recently done right after I purchased the vehicle this past November. The cruise has not worked before or after the recall repair. The previous owner did install an electric trailer brake controler that seems to have been professionally installed so I cannot tell if that unit is the cause of the cruise to not engage. The lights on the instrument panel come on when you turn the cruise on and set it but it does not engage. I have checked all of the wiring and everything looks good along with fuses and clockspring. I have also done the cruse self diagnostic and the only time the cruise light does not come on is when you push the set accel button during the test procedure. But it does not flash a trouble code at the end of the procedure nor try to adjust the throttle cable as I have been told the self diagnostic typically does. Could it be a bad module which is the part attached to the brake master cylinder? If anyone can help please let me know.

Your investigation into this may be well beyond what I am about to say so forgive me if this connection has already been confirmed ....
I got two recall notices on my 2001 Screw about the cruise control. After getting the first notice, I researched the issue on this website and found that the potential problem was leaking brake fluid getting in to the electrical switch mounted at the end of the brake master cylinder and igniting and melting the brake fluid container located just above it. Fords answer was to disconnect the plug on the switch (thus disabling the cruise ) and leaving it disconnected! A fix was supposed to be in the works. I decided to just quit using the cruise until I was notified of the fix.
Some six months later I got the recall notice on the fix. I was busy so I waited a few months and took it in. The dealer promptly "fixed" it. Before leaving the lot I opened the hood and looked. All they had done was disconnect the electrical connector at the switch and wiretie the connector to the fender. After calling the service rep on it he went off and rounded up another parts kit and installed another connector to go between the original connector and the original switch. He told me that my build date was right in the middle of two groups and one group still does not have a fix yet! Dont get me started on why it takes Ford 6 months to issue a modified electrical connector.
In any case, this switch is the one that tells the cruise system that you have hit the brake and disables the cruise. When disconnected, the cruise will not function. I have no idea if the cruise light will come on or not in this condition.
Is it possible that the dealer "fixed" your cruise control like he did mine? In any case it should be easy to check. Good Luck

When you say
Was this is complete recall, or the first step ?
The first step was to disconnect the plug on the brake unit under the hood, and tape it off. I don't think you would get the cruise light if this was disco'd, but I never tried it to be sure.
There is a self test in the cruisecontrol system.
With the key off depress and hold the cruise control off button while turning the ignition to the run position, dont start the truck, the cruise light will flash once to let you know it is in selftest.
Five additional flashes indacate a bad cruise control servo
Release the cruise off switch and within 5 seconds depress the other switches in sequence:
1. on
2. resume
3. coast
4. set/ accel
The speed control light will flash as each switch is depressed.
If the last one does not flash it may then flash a code
After this the cruise will move the throttle to test the actuator and the cable.
Make sure the trottle returns to idle and turn the key off.
This will give you direction as to what might not be working.
-> Start with checking that the secondary switch is actually plugged in. The 2nd set of fixes put a fuse in the harness, I don't know if you had this one or not, maybe look to see ( NOV seems too early for the 2nd revision harness ).
My '01 SCrew in NOV-05 all they did was unplug it and tape it up, the parts notification I got in FEB-06, that I should go back in, and get the cruise fixed the remainder of the way ( dad has not done this yet, still running with the JMC work around jumper ).

Cruise Recall
I appreciate the help on this. In regards to SSULLY's question the complete recall has been completed. The new wiring harness is installed. However as
mentioned the cruise neither worked before or after this procedure. And prior to the procedure the cruise was never disconnected per the first recall as many were. I told the ford dealer when dropping of the truck that the cruise was not working prior to the new harness being installed but was still connected and they said if it did not work after the recall work was done there would be a minimum $100 charge just to diagnose the problem. That is why I am trying to investigate myself. And as mentioned per the procedure that was mentioned on the self diagnostic the buttons when pushed in the
proper sequence only the Set/Accel button does not illuminate the cruise button and the throttle does not adjust at the end of the procedure nor do I get a set of flash's indicating a trouble code?? Any more help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Sounds like 1 of 2 things.
Clock spring in the steering wheel is having a fit.
or
There is a problem with the system itself.
This is where it gets with how comfortable do you feel.
To check the clock spring, you need to remove the airbag and the steering wheel. Do you feel good doind that ?

Clockspring
The clockspring is fine, any other ideas? I suspect that it is either a bad electrical connection somewhere, servo, or module. For some reason I have a hunch it is the module that mounts on the end of the brake master cylinder. Not sure though whether or not that is a part that typically can go bad. Anymore advice would be appreciated.
You already pulled the wheel, and checked the clock spring ? WOW !! ok... with that being a known good item...
Next thing if you want to check the new recall module for correct operation :
1. Is that the fused version, or non fused version of the recall harness ?
2. Unplug it from the plunger switch, and put a jumper wire in it. If you do not have the smaller male spade terminals, you can take apart an ATM fuse ( cut it up the center through the fuse material ) and brake away all the plastic and solder this to a piece of 16 AWG wire.
Plug this into the end of the harness towards the truck, and the new plunger is out of the loop. You could also unplug the new harness, and move the jumper towards the factory harness for this test.
Later, when I get a chance, I'll get posted the 2001 EVTM CC section for further diagnoses.
Let us know what happened with the secondary CC safety switch bypass.
I am guessing no change, with this only being a problem with the Set/Accel button not reacting to the self test, where if the new C safety switch was faulty, I woudl expect to see no section of the self test pass
