HOWTO - 1999 F150 Flareside Taillight removal

Here is the procedure to remove the Tail light on a 1999 F150 Flareside Pickup...

1) Open the tailgate and remove TWO Hex head screws...

You can use a 8mm or 5/16 inch socket.

I removed the TOP screw first as I had to hold up the tail gate to get access to that screw.

You may want to hold the tail light when removing the second screw or it might just fall out...

2) I ease out the tail light after removing the two screws...

3) This tail light assembly has 3 colored harnesses. Just twist the harness to remove it from the Tail Light.

By the way guys... that procedure is EXACTLY THE SAME for removing 2001-2003 SuperCrew tailights.

HEY, THANKS!!! I didn't even know that and was wondering how it would come off for light bulb replacement if you had a bedliner in it. I was thinking the bedliner may have had to come out. Thanks!!!!!

Heh, I knew that was coming. Mine was a hex head but I don't remember what size. If I decide to get up off my lazy *** then I might find out what size it was and edit the instructions above...

The 97 and 98 Flaresides are the same except the screws are a #2 phillips head

I'd advise using a magnetized screwdriver.

When I swapped out my stock tails for aftermarket, I managed to drop two of the screws down between the body panels. They're probably still there. Fortunately for me, the aftermarket tails required shorter screws which I had on hand.

So, what does it take to make both red brake lights work, not just the upper one. I've seen that posted on this site before, but I can't seem to find it again.

On later model flaresides/supercrews, both red lights are together and the reverse is either above or below I can't remember, but all of the red lights up with the brakes.

Great post!

Just a question:

i wanted to install an aux backup light (probably using something like a fog light).

can i just tap from the wiring on the tail-light's backup wires? where's the best place to tap it? i'd like to have it automatically turn on when i put the gears in Reverse.

thanks.
