Is that your installed price?

I just got a Viper 791VX 2-Way remote start with alarm for $230 on the internet. Installation will cost me another $200 tomorrow though, but I still saved $200+ on the unit.

The complexity of the system you will need depends on how many functions you want the remote start system to perform.

If you just want remote starting, you can buy a cheaper system for ~$100 (parts only, not installed). This will give you a remote that you can use just to remote start the truck. This does not include also having keyless entry and an alarm on this same remote. You'll end up with two remotes 1) for remote start 2) one for keyless entry.

You truck does have the PATS system that includes an RF chip in the key. In order to install the remote system you will need to buy a PATS bypass module. Some modules require you to buy and program an extra key that goes into this module. Some do not. The $100 estimate for the basic system will include a bypass module. You must supply the extra key ($10 online $40 from a ford dealer). Installed, this type of system is ~ $200.

If you want one remote that does both, you need to buy a system that does both keyless entry and remote starting on a single remote. The cost of the system goes up a little, and so does the labor to install. You note that you have an exterior keypad. These often do NOT work with aftermarket keyless entry systems and you lose this functionality.

If you want to keep the remote keypad, keyless entry, and add remote start, I think you only have only a few choices. The newer Ford system (powercode version released in 2003) with remote start. (pre 2003 Gold system includes an alarm, Silver does not, they have different names and part numbers with the new powercode versions). Cost for these systems which also need a PATS bypass module are ~$180 - $250 before installation.

I have found very few owners on any of the boards with these complex systems so you might not be able to get a lot of helpful information. Biggest headache I've read about is losing the functionality of the external keypad.

Harpoon, If you only have one key now, you are starting out at a distinct disadvantage. In order to program your own replacement key, you must have two programmed keys in hand. If you only have one, you must go to a dealer and have the second key programmed at a cutthroat rate.....If you do this, i suggest you go to the local Ace Hardware on the way home from the dealer and have another key cut. You can then program IT and if you lose your key, you still have two to program another. Now onto the next step. Check out the link I provided and look at that system, it works well with the P.A.T.S. system and works without any problems with the external keypad.......I have not talked to anyone who had a remote start system installed correctly that has had a problem with the external keypad not working.....The system above will need a pats bypass module, sold at the same site...it will end up costing you about $140.00 for the remote start and bypass kit. The remotes supplied have door lock and unlock buttons as well as the start button on them. If you are ok with cutting wires in your truck and are careful......you solder all connections, it could take you a good 8 hours to install, but you will have a flawless system and no worries about whether someone you hired installed it right......good luck and I hope this helped....

S'crewloose:

Thanks for the link back to the other thread. As one member told me they had trouble with a remote key pad. I thought it would be best to pass that along. This might be bad information on my part.

I do not have a remote keypad on my truck.

For my own remote start, I purchased the new Ford silver powercode system. The best prices I found on-line were either at ebay or fordgenuineaccessory.com. The silver system was ~ $150 and the PATS bypass ~$30.

S'CrewLoose,
I put one of these remotes in an explorer I had back in 1993, As I recall it took a while but everything worked when done. I now have an 97 F150 that has been a super truck. No reason to get rid of it yet. Question, is there any ridden problems in installing a remote in this truck? Thanks Al
