Not sure if it the same on a '01 as it is on my '98 but...
If you open the hood you'll see 2 clips above the headlamp housing, push them back (toward the cab), and that will release the headlamp housing. You can now release the entire assembly (lift it up and out) and get at the bulb.

Hey bosox glad it worked out.
Don't apologize for ignorance. Most people, myself included, found this site because they were trying to do something to their truck and were lost. When I bought my truck (used) it didn't have an owners manual (bought one on Ebay) and it had problems. I asked the "stupid" questions, and recieved more help and useful information than I ever expected. I bought the Haynes manual for my truck for $15, asked questions, and have learned enough to help other people.
I don't blame you for not forcing the clips; you were trying to replace a $8 bulb, not break a $127 lamp housing.

Okay it has come down to this. I have to change out my drivers side headlight. It's just flopping around and needs attention. However i can't get it out. What all do i have to take off to get the light out? Pictures would be great. However at this point anything goes.. Thanks for you help. By the way it is a 1994 F150. My f250 ended up in a lake. Go figure.
