Question Auto Lamps?

Is it possible to add auto lamps?

Is the only difference the main switch or is there a lot more involved?

I may have to replace my switch so I was checking so that when I replace it I would just get the auto lamp one?

if you search the forums for the keyword "autolamp" and enter my user name (pw1981) in as the poster, you will come up with a handful of posts where I have outlined the addition of the autolamp modules.

Its the switch, an amplifier (~$20), and a dash panel (~$35).

If you are already buying a switch, the rest is easy and cheap!

I tried to find the amplifier on fordpartsonline and came up empty. Searched by part number, name, etc. Found everything else.

Also, the prices are slightly higher than what you posted from your earlier mod.

Thanks, pw1981

My Fog's don't work. I still have to see what is causing that, but I think it is the switch. I want to add Autolamp anyway.

Based on what I saw on the repair cd that I have from Ford that is about all I thought was involved.

I will have to check and see if that plug is there. Then I am good to go.

Now I just need to get my ultimate question answered. I want to add the advanced overhead console w/ mpg and such to replace the basic one that I have.

Yea, I ordered everything from www.fordpartsonline.com

IF you need part #'s just look above and if you search the past post's you will find what you need or they can probably just fidn it for you. I called them.

The Light Amp. is about 20 bucks.

THanks, I'd already done that (at least I think I did). When I used the part numbers identified from the posts above, the amplifier could not be found.

That's why I asked the questions.

Of course, I could be having problems with my interface to their system, but......

I picked up my parts last night, just need to install them.

What tool do you use to remove the headlamp switch based on the Ford manual's description?

2. CAUTION:
Do not use a screwdriver to remove the headlamp switch or damage to the finish panel may occur. Adding tape to the end of a thin tool will reduce marring to the finish panel.

Insert a thin tool to remove the headlamp switch.

What "thin tool" is used for this?

Just curious, I'm thinking about doing the auto lamp (assuming truck is wired for it), but I read somewhere that the autolamp doesn't turn on the fog lights. Is that true or did I misunderstand? You have to turn the switch to the left for auto, but then can/do you pull out for fogs?

thanks...

Gotta give a plug for Gary at www.fordpartsonline.com here, guys. I ordered the parts for the autolamp mod and the keypad mod a while ago, but this damn New England winter just won't quit, so no install yet. Anyway, last night I'm going through the parts in the den, and it turns out that the headlight switch I got is the right one for the autolamp, but it's the WRONG SWITCH for a rig with fog lamps like mine - Doh!

It's not Gary's fault. I gave him the wrong part # when I ordered. I get on the horn with Gary, who bends over backwards to help me out even though it's late in the day. He shipped the right part out so I'll get it for the weekend, and I sent the non-fog light one back today. No bitching, no restocking fee, just plain old solid customer service.

For you guys who have this mod on tap for your trucks, make sure you order the right switch for your rig, and make sure you order from www.fordpartsonline.com!

I ordered mine from OEM Ford Parts . Their prices were the same or better, plus I could pick them up with a short drive.

Still would like to know what flat tool folks are using.

if you are talking about the tool that will remove the headlight switch i just used a small flat blade screwdriver and i folded a paper towel in half and raped it around the scrwedriver so it would not mark the dash. if you look at the bottom of the switch there is a noch slid the tip of the screwdriver in and push the handle down twords the fuse box and the switch will pop out.

Thanks. I rummaged through my toolbox and found a drum brake adjuster tool. I put tape on it and it worked great. Easy mod.

Related question though: the yellow know on the light sensor/amplifier - which way do you turn it to adjust the light level that the lights will turn on? In other words, clockwise makes the sensor do what?

I do not remember the exact stuff, but its actually printed right on the amplifier. ITs molded into the plastic. IIRC, its 1/16 of a turn CCW makes them come on 15 min earlier or something like that....

Check it out. Its on one side of the thing.
