Aftermarket Autolamp Ideas?

Guys: I'm just switching over to a 2002 Supercrew from a '98 Explorer, and wish I'd done it a long time ago. I really like the SC. My old Explorer had all the bells and whistles, though, and after a few days with the stock XLT Supercrew, I find the thing I miss the most is the autolamp feature that turns the headlights on and off depending on whether it's day or night. Does anybody put out a kit for this that is fairly easy to install?

Thanks in advance!

No good kit (the Autolamp kit from Ford SUCKS). You can order the individual parts and do it yourself. It looks 100% factory when done, because it is!

Here are some threads with good info on the Autolamp addition. Again, its VERY easy to do. All XLT-level F150's are prewired for it.

I have done this mod myself and its great. If you have any specific questions along the way... fire me an email and I will be glad to help.

redroader,

Next don't forget your keypad mod, and convert those visors to the Nav visors with the lit mirrors, and the Home link buttons for your garage door operators / X-11 lighting system at home.

I just did the keypad last weekend, and I am puting the interior door pics in my gallery for the slight difference to the L keypad instructions.
It is not a great difference, but I just want SCrew owners to see what is the delta between the 2.

Put them on your list of mods, you won't be sorry

As for the Autolamp, my XLT came with it, so take pw1981's post and run. I cannot offer anything on this one myself.

SSCULLY,

Can you post the part numbers for those Navi mirrors with the lights in them? (Do you happen to have the numbers for the one without the Homelink transmitter. I don't really need the homelink thing, but I might go ahead with it jist in case.) I want to do this in my truck but have been unsuccessful in finding the part numbers. If you know the number for Dark Graphite Interior, I would be forever grateful.

Thanks.

Seems like a lot of work to me. Why not hire two midgets and buy a pair of cheap walkie-talkies?

Put one midget in the floorboard and strap the other one to the front bumper.

Cecil: "Hey Iggy this is Cecil. Listen up, it's gettin pretty dark out here, reach up and turn on the damn headlights fer cryin out loud!"

Iggy: "Say the magic word..."

Cecil: "Please,...you bastard! You know you got made while I'm strapped out here!"

Iggy: "You think I got it made? redroader don't change his socks for like three days!"

(How the delayed shut-off feature works)

Cecil: "Iggy, this is Cecil. Engine shutdown, turn the damn lights off."

Iggy: "Say the magic word..."

Cecil: "Please,...you bastard!"

(Iggy gets kicked in the head by reroader exiting. How hard determines when he comes to and turns off the headlights)

pw1981,

I got the med graphite interior, so I don't know if there is a NAV dark graphite interior P/N.

The thread that I got the info out of is :
https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...threadid=73130

I don't know if there is a Nav p/n for without the homelink.
Do you know if there is a Latiat or KR with your interior color ?

If so, just call Gary Star at Fordpartsonline and he can look them up. This is where I got my NAv ones from, in med graphite.

I have never seen a dark graphite interior, is that kind of dark to have the roof panel be that dark ? ( just a side question, my dash & door handle area are the Dark Graphite, where the remainder of the interior are the med graphite color ).

Sorry I don't have the exact p/n for the dark, Gary might be able to hook you up with the right stuff from a Lariat ( if they do have the lighted mirrors like I think they do ?? ).

Good hunting.

PS : The wiring harness in my XLT was just above the door in the headliner. I took out the overhead console, and the A pillars and carefully pull down the head liners, and you will see the connector taped back into the loom for the harness there with the same connector as the Nav ones.

THIS is the info I really wanted to hear. I unscrewed mine and stuck my finger up there and didn't find it, but if its taped back into the loom, then that would explain it.

I was just trying to be lazy in asking for the part numbers... I hate ordering stuff over the phone, I'd rather do it online and I can with the part numbers. Online, I am in full control of what I order... when I do it over the phone stuff almost always gets entered wrong.

I will see if I can track down a part number and go from there. It is possible that the headliner and mirrors are Med. Graphite... I am 99% sure that the headliner and carpet are the same in Med and Dk Graphite applications, but I could be wrong.

SCULLY, almost forgot.

That other thread mentions something about the mirror visors as: "Sunvisor with auxilary secondary visor"; what does that mean?

Great info here guys.

1) I'm gonna order up the parts for the autolamp tomorrow. Thanks for the detailed response, PW.

2) SSCULLY: How big do my ***** have to be to attempt the keypad door handle mod? It was OEM on the Explorer and bailed my *** out more than once.

3) Yeah, Raoul, I tried the midget thing for a few days, but my wife made me get rid of 'em on account of Trixie (the midget under the dash) kept on leaving my fly undone. Go figure.

pw1981,

In my gallery, the interior album, I just posted a picture of the dual visor. You can see the home link buttons on the main visor.
Also the pictures of the tweeter locations, shows the color of the door panels. The majority of the door color is med. graphite.
Actually if you call Gary Star at Fordpartsonline, you will not have a problem getting the correct part. He has actually correct some part numbers that I gave him before, the guy know his stuff. Gets this all day long. He is the only part guy I know that can rattle off the list of parts needed for the L bumper conversion on a standard F-150

redroader,

The keypad mod is a no brainer, just kind of time consuming.
Just check for the tan anti-thieft box under the dash, for the fixed 5 digit code.
If you have an XLT the wiring is in the door, no problems.
The interior album of my galery also has the pics of the SCrew install, which is slightly differnet then the L install. The L install directions are at svtlightnings.com, under the how to section.

In the misc album of my galery is a picture of where to find the tan / cream colored anti-thieft module, if you are un-familar with the locations of it.

IT's MOD TIME ! Go forth and mod your trucks

SSCULLY,

Thanks for the pic, now I see what you mean. I sort of wondered why F-150's didn't have those in the forst place... though I doubt I'd use it. It looks like, from the photo, that you also had to replace the plastic piece that the mirror hooks into by the console. Is that the case?

I am really leaning toward the Homelink visor, even though I don't need it now - I might in the future and I'll spend less to do it now. The only thing is that it will interfere with my CD holder I'll have to call FPO and talk with Gary and make the decision based on costs.

pw1981,

Yep new visor holder, comes with the visor.

Umm...maybe not much cheaper, the Homelink visor I think was over 200.00, and the other was something like 43.00. That sounds about close.

Maybe you'll be going normal at that cost delta.

Hell the home link visor cost more then my Chaimberlin 1/2 HP door opener did If the cost is where I recall it to be, it was less then both 1/2 HP openers cost together

Yes I'm nuts in case you cannot tell....
