2001 Expedition AutoLamp Question
2001 XLT Expedition w/ fog lights. No auto lamp feature. Kind of a pain to always remember to turn off the headlighta after you've driven a vehicle with teh autolamp feature. Is there any way to add / upgrade my existing headlight system to the autolamp system? Just curious! Thanks in advance for your help! JC
Yes, you should be able to.
I do not have the proper part number for the switch you need, but I can give you the run down of what you need and whet you need to verify that you have.
Remove the oval cover on the passenger side of the dash. Its flexible and held in with clips, just work all the way around and remove it. Look into the "void" toward the center of the vehicle and you should find a grey colored plug (mine was attached to the shiny metal). If that grey plug is present in there, you are pre-wired for Autolamps.
You need: the switch for your NEW configuration (w/fogs and w/autolamps), the new dash cover with the opening for the autolamp amplifier (mine was dark graphite and had part number of XL3Z-15046A34-DAA, you P/N may vary based on trim color), and the light sensor amplifier (part number YL3Z-13A018-AA).
To install:
Remove old switch and plug in new switch (I reccomend not pushing it all the way back in until system is verified operational). Plug in the light amplifier. Verrify operation. Once operation is verified, attach the sensor to the new dash cover (this procedure will be pretty obvious when you get the parts in hand - I used a couple screws, but any way would work). replace dash cover, push switch in place. You're done.
Notes from my install: Make sure switch is in OFF position when you connect sensor. (Since you are not touching live wires, the battery can remain connected.) Turn the lights on the conventional way then back to off, then turn on auto. Cover dash panel with object to ensure operation. Remove object to ensure operation.
If the plug is there, then the vehicle is prewired for the system. If the plug is not there, you are not likely going to be able to do this.
For the parts, I HIGHLY reccomend calling www.FordPartsOnline.com - I have ordered from them several times and its always timely and priced well. They are great and will get you the parts. My total for parts and 3 day shipping was less than $100.
If I can answer any questions for you, drop me a line.

I know I am raising a "dead" thread here, but isn't that better than clogging the threads with a new one? Anyway, I have an 03 XLT FX4, and desire to install the autolamps. I DO have the grey colored plug attached to the metal, and from what I understand, that signifies I have the wiring, correct? My only question is exactly where the light amplifier plugs into? I understand it sets in the new panel, but does it plug into some harness tucked away, into the light switch, or somewhere else? I tried to look today, and couldn't figure it out. I just want to get things squared away before spending $ on parts in case they are n/a w/ my truck...
well, thanks to this forum, i was able to install the autolamps today after the parts came in yesterday. they work flawlessly, and the best part is that it appears completely stock, as the parts are OEM... thanks to the search feature, it shows even the "dead" threads do serve a purpose, and once again, thanks f150 online!
