Thinking about getting a different Tune (PHP)

So my new job I'm not driving around town as much and I'm driving a little bit more than I used to. I drive 25miles one way and it is all mainly 60-70mph. So I'd definitely consider that all HWY driving.

I've been kicking around the idea of getting a 89 economy tune from Bill @ PHP. I have the Gryphon set on a 93 Performance tune right now and like it a lot but thinking I could squeeze out some more MPGs possibly with the 89 Econ tune.

What do y'all think? I'm getting 15.5-16 MPG now. Sometimes I'll get 16.5 +

I get close to 15.5 mpg in highway driving with an 87 octane custom tune from PHP. If you could reduce the octane rating of the gas you burn, but at least maintain the same rate of usage, you'd come out ahead.

Edit: If you go this route, make sure you tell PHP the kind of driving you do and what your goals are. There are no guarantees, but I think you should be able to make a custom tune pay for itself.

I also would recommend an 87 octane tune, but a strict "economy" tune may not be what you really need. Discuss this with Bill.

Note - if 89 is the same price or cheaper than 87 where you are, you can bet that it has at least 10% ethanol and the 87 may be ethanol-free or close to it. You should get better mileage on ethanol-free or minimal ethanol gas.

If you are trying to lower your gas cost per mile you need to get out of 93 and into cheaper gas. I wouldn't necessarily go for off-brand gas, but look for some cheaper name brand.

I would get an 87 tow tune. The one that I got beats any other tune by a 1 mpg minimum. 13-14 in my city of stoplights and train crossings, 18 highway. I have a weighted average for mileage and I'm sitting at 14.8 mpg with 45% city across a little over 6000 miles with the majority of that being my tow tune.

Really?! I have the canned tow tune now. Should I run that?

Honestly 87 around here is almost all close to 10% ethanol if not all gas.

I'm paying close to $320-$350 in gas a month. Honestly our gas prices are pretty low here compared to national average

I wouldn't worry about E10 gas much. It's pretty nearly all you find everywhere, and is what I fill with. I agree with trying the 87 tow tune. It's a very good daily driving tune. You may well find you save with it.

If you have an aftermarket intake, you shouldn't use any of the canned tunes - it will run too lean. You need custom.

Well been using the 87 Towing tune. Been running 89 in the truck and I got 16.7mpg this tank only a increase of .2 from last tank but it's still an increase. Gonna run some tanks & see what the results are

Jeff, I too am running the 87 canned tow with my truck with minor minor adjustments. I avg the same mpg with my grandpa driving style, 16.2 avg mpg. With the cooler weather rolling in it has necked down to 15.8.

I only intend to go custom when I get longtubes. Till then, its money saved on a custom tune. I can be at a warm idle, put the truck in Drive, and it moves forward on its own. I'm cool with it
