correct tuner for my truck? worth the $?

Local craigslist, guy's selling used superchips tuner all 4.6 v8 1996-2003 #1725
I have 2003 F150 xlt 4x4.
He wants $150.
Anyone offer details on this tuner?
I need to educate myself on tuners to begin with.
Didn't find much in here searching of '1725'.

Superchips makes a quality product, but I can't tell you if that particular model will be the best for you or not. It WILL probably improve your driving experience though, IF: The owner has returned it to the "stock setting" and it is not damaged in any way.

Buying used goods over Craigslist is a bit of a crap shoot. You say the listing is "local" - any chance of the seller letting you try it on your truck before buying it?

Try it before you buy it to make sure it isn't locked......also used tuners don't come with a warranty.....

Just a quick lookup on the net, looks like a 1725 is for most CARS with 4.6 those years (like my 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis I see!) , but the 97-03 F-150s with 4.6 or 5.4 take the 1715 instead? I'ld look closer. http://www.autoanything.com/performa...uperchips.aspx

Might look at Superchips websight and "forums" there. Also, not internet updatable, you send it in to be updated.

Just sayin' .....

for a $150 buy a used sct xcal 2 and have a custom tune written. if you shop wisely for the hand held you can get it done.

I think buying a used programmer is not a good idea, could cost more to fix the truck if the programmer is bad than buying a new one.

Save up the money and get a new one.

buying a used tuner which needs custom tunes will not cost more to fix the truck, it's no different than buying new other than having $200+ still in your pocket for something else. if you buy a ****ty tuner then yea, spend the money for a used xcal and have a tuner write you a good tune if you are on a budget.

If you buy a used programmer thats bad or has currupt files it can screw up the computer in the truck. Then you have to get it towed to the dealer and pay for that, then pay for the computer to be fixed. Thats just to get the truck running again.

Plus you still have a bad programmer that you spent the money on.

I still say buy new. There is less chance of something going wrong.

Basically anything that has to do with electronics I buy new .
