Question Unsafe, lean A/F mix?

Ive been reading a few threads researching Gryphon Progremmers and am becoming a little nervous about running too lean and damaging my Engine.
I'm running an '05 5.4 w/ K&N CAI, and Magnaflow Cat-Back. I plan on getting the Gryphon this fall but do not have as of yet. My dilema is I've been running the CAI since about 10,000 mile and currently have 54,000. I have not experienced any Engine issues except for the Cam Phaser problem as of yet. What kind of issues may I have caused by runnig the CAI for 40,000 miles. Ive searced threads and cannot find what Engine damage may result from running too lean for that long.....Please advise.

I am nervous too. I am running a '04 5.4
I have a Volant CAI and Flowmaster catback.
Today I ordered Edge Evolution.
From what I read, maybe I should return it before even opening?
****. I thought I understand just enough, but maybe just enough to be dangerous?
I am running 20" wheels and 35" tires, so I was hoping the tuner would help correct changes in speedometer, odometer, shift patterns, etc.
I understand why you guys get frustrated if we keep asking the same questions over and over again....

My choice would be to ditch the useless CAI and keep the Edge.

I think I'd do the same, except I'd swap the K&N/Volant CAIs you have for a Gotts Mod version.

I am going to get a Gryphon with custom tunes.. was just wondering what damage may have already been done running the CAI and possibly too lean for the past 40,000 miles.

To name a few components that can be damaged from a LEAN condition....

Valves
Valve seats
Piston tops
Spark plugs
Exhaust manifolds
Exhaust manifold gaskets
O2 sensors
More.....

It all depends.....

Their lives can be shortened with never a code being thrown until they reach a severely damaged state..

How much soot are you guys seeing on the tailpipe after your CAI installs?

I have never seen any soot on my tailpipes before or since the CAI install.

So, K&N research an development department did no research on 3V 4.6 and 3V 5.4 before releasing this CAI specifically for these engines? Just trying to understand how this could happen. Also when I get my Gryphon will any danager talked about here, as far as running too lean, be averted?

That being the case, I would be very wary of a lean condition. My tailpipe stayed black before installing a tuner.

QUACKRSTACKR, just out of curiosity, Would'nt soot on the tailpipes mean a rich condition nad not a lean condition.. My bike used to run rich and black smoke out of the tailpipe. Wouldnt lean mean not much of anything coming out of the tailpipe?

Correct and that was my point.

You may have already had one of the lean engines that was compounded by adding CAI.

My 2005 ran quite rich just judging by the tailpipe until installing a programmer. It still runs a little rich by using the same observation.

It's not highly accurate by any stretch but is an easy to see observation of what your engine might be doing.

Just got off the phone with American Truck, who I ordered my Edge Evo from. I will return it unopened when it arrives and then have them set up (custom tune) an SCT programmer to adjust fuel ratio to counteract the lean caused by my Volant CAI and of course the 35" tires. I have had the CAI without tunes on for almost a year (15k miles). Hope I haven't damaged the engine to much...
I think I am on the right track now. Any concerns?
