Oh, you'll know, guaranteed - you will not be able to load any tuning if it is locked.

I got it on Saturday morning! Installed the performance tune immediately after filling up with 91 octane and let 'er rip. So, for now, I haven't had a chance to do any before and after speed tests, but the sop dyno says that there is a mild but feelable improvement in the mid and upper ranges. Tranny is where this is the most noticeable. Very firm and hard hitting full throttle shifts! I haven't done much with it other than to remove the speed limiter and lower the shift points and pressures slightly, but it definately makes the truck nicer to drive! As soon as I get the chance to, I will do some performance tests and report some real numbers. I was hoping that it would have a little more effect on the low end, but I'm sure that I'll get that with future mods. Anyway, I am happy with the over-all effect for now!

^^ If you don't know what yer doing, leave it at the stock settings. Lowering shift points will reduce performance.

Here is the only tweak you should do, initially: https://www.f150online.com/forums/1950574-post2.html

Additionally, this highlights the constraints of canned tuning: https://www.f150online.com/forums/1773093-post2.html

So - consider the canned device 'entry-level', if you will. You will need to run both custom tuning AND hi-octane gas to eke out the most perf you can on a non-3V 5.4.

Gears may be yer next investment to give you more low-end 'snap'. Either that or a blower. For now, lower yer expectations, given yer stated budget - significant low-end torque gains do not come cheaply.

BTW - what is yer maintenance history? Fuel filter? Plugs? Front O2's (can make a huge difference, this one)? MAF & TB cleaning? Etc, etc. ALL affect perf in various ways - all negatively, if neglected.

Thanks again, mgd. To explain what I did, when I say I lowered the shift pressure, I mean I lowered it from the max setting that the performance tune had it on but it is still considerably higher than stock. And as to the shift points, I believe it is the 1-2 shift that the rate of acceleration was decreasing before it would shift, so I lowered it a few mph to keep it in the "power band". I have barely even used this yet, so I do realize that with time I will be able to pinpoint the perfect settings, and then I can just leave it. And, of course, some day I would like to upgrade to a custom tunable programmer, but this is good for now considering I was able to get it for only $125!
