X3 programming question

Just received my X3 from VMP for 2010 F150 and I think I understand everything but wondering if it is really necessary to remove the fuses per the directions?

Remove the fuel pump fuse and fan fuse before flashing.

Hi & welcome!

Fuel pump fuse to eliminate any chance of inadvertant activity during the flash that might cause the chambers to flood in case an injector is also triggered open.

Fan fuse to reduce the load on the electrical system that might reduce voltage and jeopordize the reliability of the flashing process itself.

Yer call.

But - a lot of folks don't bother on the newer trucks. Some of that text is legacy stuff - in the past ( older trucks, and cars with factory e-fans, etc) - it was required.

I don't - but I do ensure ALL extraneous electrical loads are OFF ( audio stuff, etc) and I hook up a battery tender to the truck while flashing.

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I'll be removing the fuses just to be safe. At least the fuel pump fuse.

Especially if it takes a long time to complete the programming! I personally like MGD's caution of hooking up a battery tender while flashing. I ALWAYS flash my truck's PCM with a battery tender connected. The last thing you want is an incomplete flash due to a drop in battery voltage. (You'll have a "dead" truck.)

I did not remove any fuses, but did hook up a battery tender. It takes about 40 minutes to save your stock tune and load new tunes. It does take a lot less time to swap between tunes and revert back to stock. When I did reload my stock tune for some reason the fan came on and ran the whole time. So removing those fuses are a good idea.:o

Just a question for you guys. Why does it take 40 minutes? My edge can read, customize, and write in about 4. What is the VMP doing that the edge doesnt?

Does the Edge take that long on the 09-10's?

It's an SCT tuner BTW.

The SCT's for 09+'s also save stock TCM calibrations and write a custom one. Currently, Edge does not.

Hence the time difference. It also may be a comm speed thing, but that would only be part of it.

Plenty said already about this shortcoming of the Edge for 09+ trucks.

The previous MY's are reasonably quick on both platformas - tranny tuning is within the PCM calibration. - one file instead of two.

Ah that makes sense. I was going to say, I never heard anything about retarded program times until recently.

Cheers
