4.6 potential?
4.6 potential?
Hi, new guy here looking at my first Screw. Its got the color and the look i want but it has the 4.6 engine. Im not a hot rodder anymore but want a little juice when needed, might tow a small trailer with an ATV from time to time, whole package weighs no more than 2,000# Will a tuner make a noticeable difference in performance and tranny shift points? I have had no luck finding the color scheme i want in a 5.4 so this looks like my only option. Truck is a 2005 Thanks for the input.

as long as it has the 3.73 and you are willing to keep the stock tire size the 4.6 is fine for most people
after having my 2 supercharged 5.4's a N/A 4.6 is "weak" but the 4.6 still hauls my expedition (and occasional trailer) around no problems but I've got 3.73 gears and it's tuned aggressivly just waiting on a couple pipes and it'll be supercharged so it can fit in

4.6 is fine, I pull my Mustang on a car trailer regularly, and it weighs far more than 2,000. I used to have a 21 foot Maxum Ski boat, the truck felt that but did fine. Dont worry the 4.6 is fine, if you run into problems just get a set of 4.10's and you'll never think twice about it again. Its a good reliable engine.
No doubt about it....I run 4.56 gears with 38s and the truck run like a charm! No problems at all and theirs enough power to have some fun (intake, tbs, exhaust + tuner will wake it up 4 sure)!!!!!!!!
nothins wrong with a 4.6!!!! ive got a 2002 with 144k miles on it and i haul a 20' trailer thats solid steel with dual axles and 2 grizzly 660's
does just fine, ill haul an occasional vehicle as well, as well as cattle!

Damn, I have to wonder what your truck would run in the 1/4 mile with the 4.6L and those tires!! 4.88s would of been the ticket in that truck.
I've got a '06 Screw with the 4.6 and its a dog. I had an '02 Screw with the 4.6 with the following mods and loved it... Tru-Dual, K & N Cold Air Intake, Pullies, TPS mod and Superchips Tuner...usually would beat the stock 5.4. guys if I got the jump.
Now I just got the '06 and plan on going the same route with it...just need to get the cash together. Also it might not help that I went from a modded '04 GT to the truck.

Hehe .... and I take it even up they still beat you then?
Just razzing you .... pay no mind.
The 4.6 is a proven motor in use under brutal conditions ... like even taxis and police cars ... with both good maintenance and not so good, idling for long periods and then wide open, often for many miles. The only recurring problem I concern myself with is the plastic water crossove on the early intakes (I have a new intake for my '01 Merc as a pre-emptive step, it's from a '04, just haven't installed it yet).
I'm on my third police car (I work mostly on interstate and state highways, some pursuits on back roads too) with a 4.6, and have one in two personal vehicles. Great engine, 20 years ago I'ld have never thought 281 cubes would do what it does in a heavy car like a CV.
Not a rocket, but it does OK. My '06 CVPI is every bit as good as my '94 Caprice LT-1 ever was in power, and it handles and stops better. The '94 seemed so good then, with 350 LT-1, as it was so much better than the '91 and '89 and '86 Caprices I had before.
Like others said, plenty of tune stuff from Mustangs, etc that works and with just a little bit of gear, it'll tow even with a Screw. Just keep tires near stock diameter or you loose advantage of 3.73s, etc.
