Do you think you would need custom tunes if you had a MIT not a CAI ? The MIT would be more air then factory, even little more then factory mod.

MIT = Modular Intake Tube (aftermarket). I found out anything before the MAF sensor is ok. Anything after like a CAI you will need custom tunes. I just want to clear somethings up before buying a programer.

Sorry for highjacking your post.
I do not know to much about a programer, but from what I have read if using a CAI you should use custom settings. If you don't you can end up with a $$$$ bill, more on 04 05 trucks. I would take the CAI off and do the DWV mod, link below, untill you get your custom tunes. If you feel somthing is not right I would not chance it. I would do this mod over anything bought.

Or this one

Back to your original question: Does this thing provide a "ram" air effect? If so, I think it COULD fool the MAF sensor and cause a lean mixture. I'm sure the MAF sensor is not set up to detect a super wide range of airflow patterns accurately. It seems to be able to handle the additional air volume from a "Gott's" style intake, but I'd be nervous about anything more, without testing.

I seem to recall that Bill said air can move past the MAF at such a rate that it exceeds it's ability to record it, thus not adjust. Plus, you don't really get the full benefit of a CAI without a tune that can match the fuel needs with the intake.

Looking at the picture, it seems you could be getting a ram air effect at higher speeds.

If I'm not mistaken, the MAF sensor is something like a resistance wire that is cooled by air moving past it. The cooling effect changes its internal resistance and the voltage drop over it is then used to infer air volume. It can't really be TOO sensitive and its range has to be somewhat limited.
