tuners safe to use?

I have been reading on here a lot about tuners...

I have had my truck for 4 days and already noticed the following:

go from 1800 rpms, give it a bunch of gas to get up and go and have a wait like 1.5 seconds till it grips the gas and goes.
the tranny shift points are all sorts of weird... 1-2 0r 2-3 what ever is around 30 mph and going up lags the most i've noticed...

and the truck is not "that" fast compared to what i thought i was getting with a v-8 coming from an I6 in the jeep world...

it is my daily driver, i drive 300 miles a week every week to school, and mostly high way...

need new tires also, what size is popular around here for my truck?

will an edge programmer fix this for me, and be worth 400 bucks?

i don't plan to upgrade the exhaust or intake so i think canned tunes will be fine for me

A tuner will solve all that plus some. I have 78,000 miles on my truck, 47,000 with my tuneer. It is the one mod I can not do without.

I think it helps the tranny as it removes the built in slippage. They let them slip because people like smooth. The firm shifts(which I love) removes heat, that destroys the tranny.

Of course, if you run it hard all the time, it will tear up sooner, but under normal use, no, it will not hurt it at all.

when you say firm, do you mean like banging into gear? or just faster shifting resulting in feeling it a little bit more? still comfortable to drive?

is this adjustable?

The canned tunes come with a firmer shift and then there is an adjustment where you can make them even more firm as you wish. When you get custom tunes, you can tell the writer of the tune what you want in firmness.

Shorse, back to the title of your thread - yes, all of us would say programmers from reputable tuners (PHP, TP and VMP) are "safe to use". Of course, if you abuse your truck, nothing's safe.

I love the Gryphon from PHP that I have in my truck.

the only thing i'm worried sbout now is the shift firmness, just how firm is it... is it a rough shift, or just faster?

It won't be a problem. The firmness in the canned tunes were not near enough for me so I increased it quite a bit and my wife never complained. Believe me, she would have if it was a slammer. The automatic gears are a series of clutch plactes with an asbestos like surface. Fluid pressure pushes them together to form a solid unit and propel the vehicle. The build in slippage to make it smooth so people will not feel the shift very much. This slippage wears the surface off the plates, plus builds up detrimental heat. Your transmission will last longer by removing as much slippage as you can. The canned tune will not be a banging shift, just quicker.

The Gryphon is the same hardware as the Edge and comes with the same canned tunes but comes with the option for custom tunes later. It is worth every penny. Bill, at PHP, worked for Edge but is now has his on company.

I had the edge and upgraded to the Gryphon.
