Just made a 400 mile round-trip over the weekend. My Gryphon came with 3 canned tunes: 1-87 tranny only, 2-87 towing, 3-93 performance. First half of the trip was on level 3-93 performance. On return home, level 2-87 towing. Compared to stock, both levels were definate upgrades. I averaged 18.5 mpg down and 18.5 back (no difference in level 2 and 3). At stock, usually I get about 17.5-18 on this trip. Now, the type of driving one-way is 100 miles at 60mph on mountainous roads which kills the avg mpg. The other 100 miles is interstate driving at 75-80mph. Temp was 32F outside both ways.

Level three seemed a little too "edgy/tweaked" for me. I could feel a little "surging" sensation with just the slightest breath on the accelerator pedal. The tranny shifting was also a little too aggressive. I use cruise control a lot, and sometimes while cruising up and down the mountains, the tranny would shift pretty hard and cause a jolt in the truck. Occasionally, it would occur if letting of the gas slightly and then resuming speed.

Level two was just right. I wanted to run the 87 octane on the way home just to compare. I noticed very little if any difference in power, but the overly aggressive feeling/surging/tranny issues were gone. I'd rather use the 87 octane anyway (cheaper).

Overall, I'm very impressed. For now, I'll be running the 87 towing tune until I get my custom tunes. I have an 87 towing and 87 performance custom tune on the way. I'm sure the 87 performance is exactly what I'm looking for in my daily driven truck. I'll use the towing tune for the boat. Thanks PHP for a great product!

for taking the time to post all the cool info about your experience so far! That's really helpful to us as well as other people on the forum. (I think you're gonna love the 87 perf, too!)

Alright, so I posted in a thread that mentioned a Gryphon and I had no idea what the heck it was. Went to the powerhungryperformance website after a quick google and to my suprise there's a new world of programmers. Guess I never heard about them when dealing with my 4.2l but now that I also have a new 5.4l so I'm interested.

1. How much do they cost because I don't think the site says?
2. Can you revert back to a stock tune for any warranty work or are you stuck?

You didn't read far enough into the site. Click on the "Products" button on the left side - that opens a new page where you can click on the link for your engine (probably the second one under the heading "Ford F-Series Gasoline Vehicles". There you'll get your answers about cost. VERY affordable!

As to your second question - YES! It's a simple 15 second, menu driven operation, right in your truck, and, you can even take the Gryphon out of the truck so it's not obvious that you ever had a tune (about a two minute job). Putting it back in is almost as easy.

So, what are you waiting for? There are several of us on this forum that think the Gryphon is the BEST addon they've put on their truck. Plus, you'll find that Bill and Corey Cohron are two of the best people you''ll ever have the pleasure of doing business with!

mark-you should have noticed a big difference in power between an engine tuned for 87 octane versus 93 octane
